IMO the difference with open/closed is more apparent with the R1 than it is with the R1Z. With the R1 I find that closed narrows the soundstage and open widens it, and gives a better airiness to the presentation. With the Zenith it's less pronounced of an effect, but still there.

If you're going to use it solely to listen to files you already have and aren't streaming, I'd definitely suggest giving the AP80 a chance.. you can always sell or trade it afterward if it doesn't offer you the experience you're looking for. IMO for a standalone player you won't find much...
