New Setup
Maybe first upgrade the AMP/DAC and see how the 400S's change with that upgrade, it may make quite a difference. Something like a Magni/Modi stack. As far as headphones are concerned, maybe Senn HD650 or 660S. I've never owned them personally but have listened to the 650 and it' might be a bit...- halibut11

Schiit battle: Mimby+Magni/Modi+Valhalla/Jotenheim+dac card
+1 for Mimby + Magni 3. Can't comment on the HD650 part, but the mimby + magni combo is really great for the price, I love my stack.- halibut11

HiFiMan HE4XX
I also am running them through my Magni 3, and I do not think they are too bright, the upper mids and treble really come alive for me but it is not over bearing. As you said though, it varies from person to person but I don't think they are by any means too bright. I want to try them on a...- halibut11

Schiit Jotunheim Review / Preview - Head-Fi TV
Good to know, I am close to Schiit's retail store so I may just pick up a balanced cable and go up there to try it out, if I don't like it I'll sell the balanced cable I guess. Thanks for the input. Loki is on my Christmas list so I may have even more of a reason to pick up a Jot. Thank you.- halibut11

Schiit Jotunheim Review / Preview - Head-Fi TV
I could use a bit more sparkle with the Fostex's for sure, and after a bit of listening to the HE-4XX's I wouldn't mind some more too as of now- so I guess that answers my question. And yeah, I need to get a mod for the Fostex, but then I'll at least be able to use the same cable for both...- halibut11

Schiit Jotunheim Review / Preview - Head-Fi TV
Any thoughts on moving from a Magni 3 to a Jotunheim and running my HE-4XX's balanced? I also couldn't find much about Jotunheim pairing with the HE-400 series in general so thoughts on that would be great too.- halibut11

HiFiMan HE4XX
I just got mt 4XX's yesterday and have had a good amount of time with them. My other pair are TH-X00's and I like how they are very different in regard to sound signature. They're no worse or better to me, just different. The TH-X00's are more fun in the bass and of course are closed, and the...- halibut11

New member - Help with a new audio setup
Standalone DACs like the modi don't have any amplification capability so you would need an amp to be paired with the dac. The Schiit Fulla 2 is probably your best bet as it is both an amp and dac in one it also has pre-outs so it can also be used for your desk speakers. For the price it does...- halibut11

Magni 3 Impressions
Yeah I agree, but I definitely heard a difference between the Modi 2U and Bifrost 4490. I just thought it was interesting. I get the upgradable nature, but at that point I would just move up to the Gungnir. Again, it's all subjective I guess.- halibut11

Magni 3 Impressions
Just my two cents but I started with a Magni 3 + Modu 2U stack and gave it 2 weeks and ended up trading the Modi 2U for the modi multibit. I heard the difference a lot more when I listened to live recordings and acoustic material, there was more detail and fullness, and it did have a bit of an...- halibut11

What dac/amp, amp, or dac should I buy with a budget of a $100?
+1 on the Magni 3. I absolutely love mine, and its pretty good when paired with the Modi Multibit. I did run it off my motherboard in my PC for a bit and it was fine for all intents and purposes.- halibut11

Magni/Modi/HD-650 next upgrade?
I would add the Schiit Jotunhem to that list. You can get it without the DAC. It's next on my list.- halibut11

Help for the eclectic listener, first time rig
I know that Massdrop is shipping the HE-4XX's early, maybe even this Monday, so the second batch may be available more immediately after they ship the initial batch. If you can monitor that they may be a great choice at 169$ I think. And I second the Fulla 2.- halibut11

Hello! I am new. Looking for a new set of headphones.
I feel like active noise cancelling is hard to come by for 130 unless you poke around on the used market. I don't really know much about them only that if I ever got a pair I would save up for the Bose QC35's (sacrilege I know). But the ATH-M40x's are a great choice, my roommate has them and...- halibut11

What if you could only have one headphone....or two. What would you choose?
I would take Mr. Speakers Aeon- Closed is the most versatile for a one for everything headphone, I just wish I could afford them- I've only heard them.- halibut11

Amp recommendation for TH-X00
I've got the TH-X00's, they're my first real upgrade since my sony mdr-7506's that I bought 6 years ago. Right now I've got a Magni 3 and Modi Multibit and it's working flawlessly. I ran them through my PC (ALC1220A) before I bough the schiit stack and they sounded fine but the dedicated AMP/DAC...- halibut11
