Russia's next president is a hard rock freak
This is wild... a 42 year old law professor who has never held public office will most likely replace Vladimir Putin in March 2008. He's a Led Zeppelin fanatic, and a vinyl collector. Who is Dmitry Medvedev?- Sarchi

No, not the Hardy Boys! Anyone here a fan? I borrowed this CD, it's really good! I wonder what their other stuff is like. -
DIY "Spud" amp for headphones
OK, the idea is to build an inexpensive, simple spud amp, just one tube per channel, single gain stage. Using 8 Ohm transformers and speaker taps. I don't want op amps or any silicon. I'm having great success running my low-z AT's off the speaker taps of my Sophia, I use very moderate gain on...- Sarchi

Looking for an adaptor like this
I'd like to get a decent quality 1/4" to 3.5mm extension type adaptor. Doesn't need to be a long extension, I want this style mainly to protect my AT plug and my Zune's jack from accidental wear and tear. A right angle mini would be even better, I suppose. Any suggestions where to find one?- Sarchi

Marantz CD-5001
I finally picked up my 5001 today....I'm listening now on my W1000's via the built in headphone amp. Sounds very good! Maybe a bit "digital" but it probably needs a few hours play time too. (I got it on the refurb deal for $229 at HiFiTrader.com, it appears to be basically brand new) Never...- Sarchi

Maybe the most interesting John Lennon story you'll ever read
This isn't new, but I stumbled on it this evening. It's a Harvard student's grad paper, entitled "You Say You Want A Velvet Revolution?" You Say You Want a Velvet Revolution Really fascinating reading. Sometimes music matters more than we realize. -
Closed 'phones and soundstage?
So far my headphone journey has been very positive. I'm a longtime speakerphile, and the one area I get a bit hung up on is the soundstage, or lack of it. Not that it's a show stopper, but since so many here tout this and that soundstage, I thought I'd ask. With closed 'phones (lower end...- Sarchi

Audio-Technica 53mm drivers
I've searched on Google, A-T site and here, and come up empty so far. Is there a "primer" or wiki out there somewhere on the A-T drivers? I'd like to know what the differences are between the models, if they're interchangeable with other enclosures (could I put W5000 or even L3000 in my...- Sarchi

6N vs 4N copper, can you hear a difference?
Let's say the application is homebrew speaker wire, and I have a reasonably high-rez system, and my choice is: 26awg 6N cryo-treated at 1.40/ft 18awg 4N at 1.35/ft These are solid core copper marketed as hookup wire from Jupiter. About 9 ft per side. I'd be inclined to go with the...- Sarchi

Hey admins --
Could someone please put the vertical message view style back? In 3.5 it's in General Settings--> Style & Language Settings, the bottom option is for legacy postbit (vertical). This makes the poster's info appear to the left of the post, like we had it before. Thanks!!! And thanks...- Sarchi

Canadian Dollar "what will you buy" thread
OK Canucks, if our loonie hits $ _X_, what will you buy? If it hits $1.20 (which I think it will very soon), I think I'm gonna pick up a Yamamoto HA-02. Something I wouldn't dream of happening in the near future under 'normal' circumstances. Get it while you can, as they say.- Sarchi

Help with Aikido 24V hybrid (BUF634) headphone amp
I got the TO-220 package IC's, thanks to Marshall, as well as heatsinks. I have a working 24V Aikido set up as a linestage preamp, I want to convert it to headphone duty with the BUF634's. This looks easy, but can someone walk me through the connections? I'm refering to Broskie's blog post...- Sarchi

Got some 35mm slides here
My stepmom just gave me a bunch of color slides from my childhood, with both parents and everything. Can anyone recommend a good place to have them scanned? I'd like to get some high quality jpeg's from these, if it's possible. (the slides 'look good' without any magnification, but I'm not...- Sarchi

Turn me on to some good world music
I have pretty limited exposure to "world music"....limited to stuff like Ladysmith Black Mambazo, the Cuban Buena Vista artists, Manu Chao, some bossa nova. I would be interested in some latin, klezmer and African recommendations....and others, though to be honest I'm not that interested in... -
CD5001's headphone amp any good?
I was curious if any Marantz CD5001 owners use the headphone jack. They boast "Newly Designed Headphone Amp. With Buffer Circuit" but no detailed specs. I've been using the headphone jack on my Pioneer PDR-509 and comparing it with the LD MT, using low impedance Senns (HD205). Surprisingly...- Sarchi

Another disturbing trend....
NOTE: This has nothing specifically to do with boomana's thread/rant, or even with head-fi.org or headphone audio per se. It's a general observation. I've just been noticing recently the tendency in internet audio circles to value products based on their retail pricing. The ultra expensive...- Sarchi

Do men have more 'sensitive' hearing than women?
Women in general take little interest in high end audio. There are probably a bunch of reasons for that (like that we're a bunch of nerds), but one of the recent threads got me wondering about this again. My wife occasionally likes to rhyme off various caveman theories; e.g. why am I more...- Sarchi

Digital is so much better than vinyl!!
Haha....no, it's not. But I got you to look. Seriously though, I've slowly come to the grudging admission that below a certain price point, there's probably more enjoyment of music to be had from CD's (and FLAC) than from vinyl. I'm not sure what that threshold is; but I'd probably peg it...- Sarchi

Aikido 24V PSU ....help
I bought this Sola linear regulated PSU - here's the eBay link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=120165141793 I connected it up, it works fine. Sound? In a word, it sucks. Kind of slow, veiled, underpowered, vaguely gutless, smeared details etc. It just sounds wrong. Running on...- Sarchi
