Reply to review by 'jay_wj' on item 'Philips SHP9500'
@takato14: Thanks for your input. Sure, your mileage may vary. Audio perception is ultimately subjective. Still, I think there is some possibility. One is that the headphones' sound characteristics are opposite to your preference (this CAN still be the case even when the headphones' measured...- Jay_WJ

Review by 'Jay_WJ' on item 'Philips SHP9500'
These headphones are a real treat for the price. They should sell at a significantly higher price than they do now, but are available at low prices only because they are being discontinued (not official yet, but apparently they are). I am a headphone enthusiast and own numerous headphones...- Jay_WJ

Tascam TH-02 - Headphones waiting to be discovered??? (now Appreciation Thread)
Ringing is not much audible. Plus, it is due to the driver, which is not very well addressed by a mod.- Jay_WJ

Oppo PM-1: A New Planar Magnetic Headphone!
I am a speaker DIY'er and measure linear/nonlinear distortions on a regular basis. The audibility depends. In my case, I know how different things with -30 dB versus -50 dB distortion products sound WHen listening to music. And in general we do not know if a driver's nonlinear behavior...- Jay_WJ

Oppo PM-1: A New Planar Magnetic Headphone!
That is not the main point. It is just a measurement condition in which we want to distinguish different headphones. It can be measured at lower SPLs. The InnerFidelity measurements include THD at 90 dB as well.- Jay_WJ

Oppo PM-1: A New Planar Magnetic Headphone!
Believe it or not, I have nearly photographic memory of all InnerFidelity and other sites' headphone distortion measurements. Yes, I was aware of the HE400's measurements, which was the reason why I added the qualifier, "several hundred dollars." Assuming that they were measured...- Jay_WJ

Oppo PM-1: A New Planar Magnetic Headphone!
Sure, when I talk about measurements, I usually add carefully chosen qualifiers so that they may not be misinterpreted. But as a human, I sometimes forget. There is background when I said the pair might be defective. I have seen no planar-magnetic headphones (which cost several hundred...- Jay_WJ

Oppo PM-1: A New Planar Magnetic Headphone!
Currawong, I think a reasonable person should have no problem understanding what you are trying to convey. Your take on this is not loosely ground. I think it is merely a perspective difference, not a fundamental difference. No one who has measurement experiences states that any kind of...- Jay_WJ

Oppo PM-1: A New Planar Magnetic Headphone!
I meant the THD. Sorry about the confusion due to my word choice. What I meant was not actually "ringing" or resonance, which is a linear phenomenon, although it can induce nonlinear distortion. Of course, CSD obtained from an impulse measurement with gating is not reliable in lower ranges.- Jay_WJ

Oppo PM-1: A New Planar Magnetic Headphone!
The HD800 does not have the best measurements. Its linear distortion is higher than that of the HD600 or the HD650 by the standard of any target responses. Anyway, I got your point.- Jay_WJ

Oppo PM-1: A New Planar Magnetic Headphone!
The About.com measurements are not as well-established as InnerFidelity's, but it is incorrect that the PM-1 measurements are without a known base. Brent measured quite a bit of headphones using the same methodology and condition, many of which have also been measured at InnerFidelity. It IS...- Jay_WJ

I will follow your advice as you are an Admin. But I do not think what you just said in the above is well-grounded judgment. Objective measurements are huge information and their interpretation can be very helpful for people to make judgment. Sometimes, proper interpretation of measurements...- Jay_WJ

Oppo PM-1: A New Planar Magnetic Headphone!
Thanks for the comments. I personally like HD sweeps referenced at 90 dB at 1 kHz that show all harmonic products up to 5th order over all frequencies. This format contains most information, IMO, and is how I measure speaker drivers. One thing to add: Do not generalize too much about...- Jay_WJ

Oppo PM-1: A New Planar Magnetic Headphone!
Let's not make this yet another instance of subjective vs objective arguments. The point is, IMO, that a pair of $1000 headphones should excel both in measurements AND in subjective impressions. Of course, no headphones can satisfy ALL people's subjective preference, but it is possible to do...- Jay_WJ

Oppo PM-1: A New Planar Magnetic Headphone!
Nicely put, vkalia. In fact, I really hope that the About.com measurements are simply a setup-related artifact or due to a defective sample. Let us wait for Tyll's measurements to be up at InnderFidelity. IN CASE the midrange anomaly is consistent across units, it will be audible as I said in...- Jay_WJ

These are now $18.62 (black) and $16.23 (white)! Amazing headphones for the price. Simply lift the response around 4 kHz and hear the near-reference sound. I use the following EQ setting: Center Frequency: 3,800 Hz Gain: 5.0 dB Q: 1.20 Center Frequency: 8,500 Hz Gain: -2.0 dB Q: 2.40- Jay_WJ

Tascam TH-02 - Headphones waiting to be discovered??? (now Appreciation Thread)
In fact, his measurements of FR and CSD are a mystery as I cannot find info about an exact procedure for obtaining them. With a minimum phase system (a headphone is, especially w.r.t. its high frequency behavior such as ringing, resonances, breakup), a non-heavily-smoothed FR plot derived...- Jay_WJ

I think my negative tone about headphone mods in general may have misrepresented the main message of my post. Then, 3 conductor cable will give you more options. After a long search, I found the following cable, which I just received in the mail: http://www.redco.com/Gepco-XB401.html Only 3.7 mm (0.145 in) thick (i.e., not too thin and not too thick), soft and flexible. It has very low...- Jay_WJ

Tascam TH-02 - Headphones waiting to be discovered??? (now Appreciation Thread)
I do not think his measurements before and after a mod demonstrated that the entire mod would be worth the effort. Basically, what his measurements tell is that the ringing (4 to 9 kHz) is the driver's nature. Based on my experience of acoustic measurements of transducers, I seriously doubt...- Jay_WJ
