    The Stax Thread III

I've not opened mine up, but I'm pretty sure it's not self-biasing. It needs to be plugged in for one, and doesn't have the behaviours of the SRD6 (which is self-biasing), namely fade-in after quiet sections and less/none channel imbalance on some of my older stax (which start with imbalance on...

    The Stax Thread III

What are peoples opionions on the SRD-X pro? Personally not noticed much difference sonically from SRD6, is the SRD 7 much better than SRD6 or SRD-X pro? However lots of info seem to recommmend SRD7 as the best STAX enigizer (not amp), is this mainly due to the transformers it uses? Also, the...

"Pro" SR5? What sorcery is this?

    Show us your vintage headphones!

4 pairs, but only 1 of which can actually be used as a headphone. First pair I got in 2009 (very cheap), last pair I got probably about 5 years ago and paid 60 quid for them. Checking sold listings on ebay uk, last pair went for 70 quid (21st Jan) so I wouldn't say it's skyrocketed, rather...

    Show us your vintage headphones!

Agreed. My all time favourite vintage planar too (original and the best!). I have 4 pairs in various states (2 broken shells, one with a bad left driver, one complete) as they were my daily (8 hours and day, 5 days a week) for about 12 years up until fairly recently :). There might actually be...

    The Stax Thread III

Since starting my Stax journey, the Sigma, was an enigma that I thought I would never see in the flesh, let alone listen to. However, after a chance encounter with a very resonably priced ebay BIN listing, ambiguously titled "Vintage stax headphone"... one impulsive jump later... I am the proud...

    Stax SR-X1 (new entry model)

I agree that the housing probably has the biggest impact on the sound signature, but the SR-5N and Gamma are different headphones. In terms of just pad rolling on the mk3, do circumaural make much of a difference to the sound? I've tried a number of different supra-aural pads and while there...

    Stax SR-X1 (new entry model)

I think the sound signature of the SR-X (mk3) comes more from the damping and stator design rather than the pads (at least ime trying various pads of differing thickness etc had a noticable, but not huge difference for me... the "up-front in your face mids" always seemed to stay there, with just...

    Stax SR-X1 (new entry model)

I have two pairs of SR-X mk3 that both have more body (maybe marginally less extension) than my blu-tacked L500 mk1. I think the amp is pivotal in this respect (Fiio E09K/E17 -> Chi-fi (Prozor???) -> SRDX-Pro). The bass of a SR-X mk3 driver is severly underated and can achieve some truly...

    The Stax Thread III

Very cool, I'm in :) So it's sound stage is more 'Lambda' like wide, rather than narrower like the original SRX? Hows the low end extension?

    Orthodynamic Roundup

Those are electret headphones, not isodynamic/orthodynamic unfortunately. They don't sound great :( Very thin/veiled sound. I didn't spend long with them and passed mine on pretty quickly. The N6325 are much better.

    Show us your vintage headphones!

I have a pair of EAH-80E (I think the 'E' is for European Market, and the 'A' American?), but look exactly the same as the EAH-80A, down to the box. Mine were also in mint condition which is always nice for Electrets. I think they are very good. They weren't at first but after some warming (a...

    History of orthodynamic (planar-magnetic) headphones

Fun Fact: "Wharfedale ID1" were never called the ID1. Their name was "Wharfedale Isodynamic". ID1 seems to be a name retrospectively given to them due to the next wharfedale isodynamic headphone being called the ID2. Unsure by who and when this started happening, but I don't think it was...

Without derailing this thread too much... How does the ECR400 sound with respect to the ECR500?

    Orthodynamic Roundup

While I think this is probably the case in general, I think it is more about how the electrets are stored over time. I have a number of electrets which no longer work (very weak if any sound), but also a few which sound consistently as other owners have said theirs sounds. Echo ED-1000, Philips...

    Orthodynamic Roundup

Lol, I've been watching these and hovering over the bid button for the past two weeks-ish. Peerless PMB 6 was exactly my thoughts too (looks identitcal, and certainly looks like an ortho driver in there)... I just can't justify getting any more headphones at the moment. I hope someone here gets...

    Show us your vintage headphones!

So many a moon ago, I used to collect some vintage headphones, looking for that elusive 'diamond in the rough'. I went into the attic the other day and found some of my boxes of oldies but goldies... Here are some of the highlights.... many more to come, this was just 1 of about 6 boxes :)...

    Orthodynamic Roundup

Whoa, can't beleive this thread is still going :L3000: In terms of opening a HOK, there is a very simple, pain free way which requires 3+ biro pen lids. Simply insert in each of the clips and apply a tiny little bit of force. The driver will just fall out without any worry of snapping it. I can...

    Electret Driver Remagnetization

Doh...Ah yes, my confusion...its not the magnet(s) that are failing its the electric charge.... in which case, can I re-charge an electret driver? Would I be along the correct lines in saying Electrostatic Induction to be a start.... this seems fairly simple in principle? But I'm thinking it is...

    Electret Driver Remagnetization

Greetings all, first up.... is this possible???   In theory I think it should be, but in practice maybe not since I can't find any info on this process. I would like to try it with an old electret that I have which appears to be very quiet and then sound distored on max volume (and it stil...
