They need them for noise isolation. I know in some situations, they use headphones that pumped white noise, and then computer audio through IEMs. Depends on if the arena has booths or not. Also, they ALL have that setup at those competitions. So it's not like someone is there with worlds...

When considering the two, you may want to consider the 'fit' of the two. Regardless of sound, the westones will probably stay in your ear better if you have to do any kinda of activity while wearing them.  I guess I can't find the sale anywhere, but at that price range you are comparing them...

I've been eyeing them really hard, people say they are somewhat comparable to HE-560 and probably just as good with right amp or whatever. I think those might be the ones I go with.

I have a pair of Westone 4's and the cable has started to tear near the ear bud (Literally the section coming out of the ear piece).  Should I attempt a DIY on such a close proximity to the ear piece or pay for it to be done?

Well, I decided the $200 difference wasn't really worth the replaceable cables.  I don't plan on working out in these anyways, they will be purely for studying / on my desk. Anywways, I'm going to compare them to my Shure SE215's. And see if I can really tell the difference.  Still going...
