Review by 'onionskin' on item 'HiFiMAN RE-400'

I got these as a backup to my RE-262.  I wanted something I could run without an amp.  The 400 provides that refined HiFiMan sound I have come to admire.  The 400 absolutely squares up with my 262 when amped, but I really got them so I could run lighter (just a dap), they totally impress in this...

I'll be staying away for now.  I have dealt w/ head-direct USA support and while very polite and responsive the service was glacial, I had to nag and nag and nag... Love their products though.  I hope they get this sorted.

Fostex T50RP Incremental Mods and Measurements

Thanks for the hookup for the err, hookup wire satwilson.  Looks like excellent stuff at reasonable prices, even cheaper than Apexjr.  I wonder where he gets it all, must be a military boneyard close by.

yeah I don't go in much for cable religion either...or at least have realistic expectations.  I figure the t50's come with really cheap wire though, and at least with speakers I can hear a difference between cheap and competent wire.  I have never recabled a headphone but figure the t50 is a...

Fostex T50RP Incremental Mods and Measurements

Looks promising and I really like the price because I'm not interested in throwing 2 bens at a $90 headphone (I'm clocked in at around $170 to date).  My goal is maximum SQ for minimum investment and so far have exceeded my most optimistic dreams.

Thank you for that.  Recabling is my next project to squeeze a little somethin' more out of these. Anyone have suggestions on wire?  I was going to start with either canre star quad or litz braid some cat-5 but I would be interested to know others successes.

The Great Grado Experiment (4 tonewoods tested, more to come!)

^^ Truth.  The headphones are a means to an end. I sense an impending need for some wood to breathe new life into my old 225's.

Fostex T50RP Incremental Mods and Measurements

I promised to share my wool experiment a couple days ago.  It is a visual recap of my earlier post: http://www.head-fi.org/t/618659/fostex-t50rp-incremental-mods-and-measurements/720#post_9916594 My weak attempt at following in the steps of BMF, here it goes:   First the denuded driver ear...

Fostex T50RP Incremental Mods and Measurements

That is the same stuff I have.  My chunk varies from less than 20mm to 25mm in thickness.   I cut a strip 60-70mm wide by 140mm and folded it in half (shaking out all the loose fibers made from cutting it first).  I took my piece from the thick end but that was too much so I peeled a thin...

Fostex T50RP Incremental Mods and Measurements

I tried the thin wool quilt batting without much success, it was coarse and fluffy.  I could not tame the bass bloom with it.  The previous page has my post where I outlined my results with the leftover wool I had from Madisound for my backloaded horns.  That wool batting was closer to 2"...

Echoing Thujone: Make you t50 what you want, the basics are all there, sound stage, detail, etc.  Frequency response is tunable to your liking. I followed BMF initially but ultimately did my own thing, they suit my taste in music, my preferences etc.  It's all about having fun, not stressing...

it is too cool for words that Dan makes these pads available to everyone.  I agree with all the points made by vortexblast; the alphas make the t50 world class and all for less than 2 bills.  Too bad you didn't grab the comfort strap before shipping to France as well.  Call me crazy but in...

Review by 'onionskin' on item 'Fostex T50RP Closed Ear Stereo Headphones'

Buy it, mod it, slip on a pair of alpha dogs, smile. Not worth owning if you don't mod.  I got maybe a half hour on them unmodded just to satisfy my curiosity.  I own better cans that cost more and less, so pretty worthless to me until modded. Ratings are based on modded cans including comfort...

Fostex T50RP Incremental Mods and Measurements

I know this has been done to death but here is yet another simple riff on BMF incremental mods: Lined sides and bottom of the cup well, above and below the hanger (not the bass port), and laddered in all with 4mm of adhesive wool felt**.  This brought all the felt up flush. Plasticine in the...

An short review of the Hifiman RE-ZERO

@poodytang : yep, I love the sweet sound of my yuin pk-3 but the resolution of the zero is amazing...I'm hoping to get both with the re-262.   @armandhammer : it's outside my budget too, but I have a roll-yer-own cmoy (that sounds amazing), but it drains pairs of 9v batteries like pez...no...

An short review of the Hifiman RE-ZERO

Quote: Good to hear the 262 works well with the JDS cmoy.  I have the re-zero, they are incredibly resolving but I found them a little fatiguing so I am going to move to the 262.  Since they will require an amp, I have been eyeing the c421.  I would think the characteristics would be...

Review by 'onionskin' on item 'Schiit Asgard Headphone Amplifier'

Mike and Jason have now successfully parted me with a tidy sum, but when I listen to their gear I smile.  I have an old pair of Grado SR-225's that I now realize I have never really heard.   I had already owned the Bifrost for my stereo but I had been driving the Grados with what was to me a...

Just the thing for hooking up your Schiit!

Might work, but I kind of whished Schiit didn't waste the money on NanoAeroCap™.  In blind A/B I really cant hear the difference between NAC and non-NAC cables. Pretty square price though, I might pinch for a pair anyhow.
