Brian modified my ancient Westone UM2 IEM's to use removable 2-pin cables. Very clean job, and I got them back within about a week of dropping them off (shipped out in less then a week)! I would certainly contact and recommend him for any other cable-related jobs in the future. :ksc75smile...

So far so good. I think that the bass might be less detailed than with the DR.DAC2, but that could just be my imagination; I didn't test them back-to-back. Honestly, it's good enough for me, and I'm not going to bother comparing it to a few other setups to figure out if there was a marginal...

I received my LA-200 over the weekend and hooked it up to my W1000X's and my new B&W 685 speakers. All good so far. I'm surprised that I have to turn up the volume as much as I do for the headphones, since they're so low impedance, but it doesn't hurt anything.

Thanks for getting back to me about the W1000's! I think I'll give the LA-200 a go. Most likely, the DAC + headphone amp part of it is not going to be any worse than the DR.DAC2 (and probably better). As you mention in the review, there really aren't a lot of direct competitors to the LA-200...

I'm a little surprised that such devices aren't more popular, now that standard headphone DAC/amps are so mainstream. :) What I want: USB DAC 1/4" headphone out 2x powered speaker out (not necessarily too powerful, but would be nice to have something that could drive floorstanding...

IMO, Grados are and have always been a bad value for the money, once we start talking about models that are higher-end than SR80. I have not heard the GS1000, but you should really consider the price range... If you were to go with used headphones, especially, then the differences in price...

QQQ, that last number does mean that they're different drivers. The one with the 6 matches the K601 and the 7 matches the K701. It's just up to how many different service documents they have for their series (e.g., the one available for the K500 is one that's for K400/401/500/501, while the K240...

My personal preference for color was probably the K701. They're more unique, if anything. Oh, and they came with a little stand, whereas the K702's did not. Worth upgrading? I highly doubt it.

I always thought that the K701's are not as ridiculously hard to drive as people say. Based on your music choices, I think that the AKG's would be a better choice. For example, I think that rap and trance would be awful on Grados and more neutral on the K701's. If there are Grado fans who...
