Do all open headphones leak the same?
I'm thinking about buying a pair of Grado SR-60's, as a cheap open headphone. (Or maybe something even cheaper, and then I can throw in something closed too.) I figure, even if I get tired of it, I can justify it as a test to see whether open/closed headphones are even acceptable where I want to...- Strogian

Autoswitch: AC- vs. battery-powered
Is there a simple way to make my amp powered via the battery when no AC is available, but use the AC if it is plugged in? I was going to just put a two-way switch next to the AC socket, but maybe that is stupid.- Strogian

grease on your tools?
What is that grease that coats all the new tools, e.g. wire strippers, electricians knife, etc. (I got them from Sears) Should I be greasing all my tools with the same stuff?- Strogian

magnifying
OK, here's another question for you guys: I've been looking into ways of magnifying what I see, partially to see the parts more closely, and partly to be able to sit further away from the soldering iron (heat + flux ugh..) when I'm working. I like the idea of clip-on lenses (loupes they're...- Strogian

DC power supply for battery-powered amp
I have this.. I think.. CMOY amp that JMT built for me a while back, and it takes 2 9V batteries right now. But, as I have learned a wee bit about electronics, I feel like modifying it to also let me plug it in to the wall. So I went over to Radio Shack and got a 15V (up to 1000mA) adapter --...- Strogian

analog multimeters
I was thinking about getting an analog multimeter, not necessarily for audio use. (but I bet I'll be using it on an amp eventually ) So, naturally, I look for the absolute best of the best to see what is possible, and I see that Simpson and Triplett have made the "industry standard" meters...- Strogian

Tape recording
What would you suggest to transfer audio files on my computer onto cassette tapes? (some kind of cassette recorder with line-in, I guess?) All I have in my car is a tape player, so I need to put stuff onto a tape to play it in there. I probably want something on the less-expensive side of...- Strogian

Rechargeable 9V batteries
All right, I was just looking for some NiMH 9V batteries, and found the actual 9.6-volt batteries at thomas-distributing. However, they say that you should have a charger that has an output of at least 10.5 volts in order to charge them fully. I looked at my Rayovac PS9 9-volt battery charger...- Strogian

March of the Toreadors
I've listened to a few CD's with this piece on it (March of the Toreadors -- Bizet's Carmen Suites), but it's always just the instruments; i.e. no singing. Now, I usually prefer opera music without the singing, but this one just doesn't sound right without it. Can anyone suggest to me a good... -
Knowing if your ety seal is good
I was just reading old threads about ety seals, and I noticed what I think may be some really good advice. Someone mentioned that what he could do with a good seal is to sort of wiggle the ety back and forth in his ear, and if he can feel the pressure on the eardrum then it's sealed. (he said...- Strogian

ER-4 isolation
All right guys, I'm still figuring out how to put these ER-4's in. I'd like to have the opinions of a bunch of people here, on how much isolation you really get with the ER-4's. (Both when you are listening to music, and when you have them in but aren't listening to anything) I thought I had a...- Strogian

Hiss when volume on high
When I turn my speakers on to max volume, I can hear a hissing sound. Is this completely due to what my sound card is outputting, or could the speakers be causing some of it as well? The reason I ask is because I want to actually see how much the EMI of my computer is affecting my sound card...- Strogian

er-4p adaptor cable
I was wondering, could I just get some 80-or so ohm adaptor cable to connect my sound source to an amp, then connect a er-4p directly to the amp and have the same effect as using an er-4s? Or does the resistor have to be between the amp and the headphone?- Strogian

SB Live!
I'm thinking about getting a new sound card to replace my SB Live! Value. In an earlier post, I read that hissing/cracking from the Live could actually damage speakers. Is this a danger to my Ety ER-4S headphones? Should I pull them out right now? Anyway, I was thinking of getting some sort of...- Strogian

Er-4s
I just got my ER-4S today. I must say, sticking these things in my ears is really no big deal. I guess I just didn't like the word "ear canal." Anyway, I've got a couple of questions about them. First, are these supposed to block out all (quiet) external sound? Because I can hear plenty of...- Strogian
