From the specs it looks like it ought to be able to drive it fine (in 'low power' mode it can put 1.7v into any load from 8ohms up, which is more than enough for the AFCs, and its output impedance is <1 ohm), dunno about subjective impressions.

Basically, yes, but it's worth bearing in mind that this *alone* isn't a problem. Some headphones need more juice than others. If your amp can provide enough juice to make them play as loud as you like, without audible problems, it really doesn't matter what number or dial position the volume...

That sounds pretty crazy, if it somehow dropped off that much in power between 16 and 13 ohms - as we figured out the AFCs need way less than 550mW...since bearFNF isn't having the same problem maybe you just got a bad unit or something? I dunno.

Well, it makes things simpler :p If you're dealing with headphones where it's *not* flat, I think - per nwavguy again - the conservative thing to do is base your calculations off the *highest* measured impedance. So e.g. for a pair of HD800s, you'd wanna base your calculations off the peak...

fwiw, 16 and 13 are sufficiently close that I'd just use the number with a bit of padding...so long as the spec says it outputs a bit more power than you need at 16ohm you're almost certainly gonna be fine :). edit: sorry for all the edits, it's late and I was misremembering / mixing up some...

Sorry, just to link my reply back to your question a bit better: if the only spec the manufacturer gives is power into a single impedance, they're not really telling the whole story. They're giving you the data for *a single point* on a power vs. impedance graph; you can't 100% reliably...

That table's basically 'after impedance'. Whatever the impedance of the headphones, the amp needs to be able to output the amount of power shown in the table *into that impedance* in order to drive the headphones to the volume shown in the table. So, since the impedance of the AFCs is 13 ohms...

Yeah, I've been using Vrms just because that happened to be what most of the things I've been looking at had specs in, but indeed you can reckon from Vrms or mA and get the same result...thanks, math! :p Indeed since this DAC seems to have its output current capped, it makes sense to look at...

In case it helps, I've been looking into that (as I may soon wind up with two pairs of headphones with 4XLR termination, and a DAP with 4.4mm headphone port...) and you can find this kind of adapter on ebay/amazon/aliexpress for $30-$50...

IMHO the difference is obvious. I'm not one of those folks who claims to be able to hear the difference between two nigh-on identical cables in three seconds flat, but I don't have any difficulty hearing the difference between AFC and AFO, and I don't think anyone would, truly. I demo'ed them...
