TEST INVITE: 24-bit vs. 16-bit Listening Test Part Deux... Daft Punk Edition
Hey guys and gals, unfortunately don't get much time to visit many forums but wanted to send out an invite here on Head-Fi. I have a 16-bit vs. 24-bit listening test up if you have not seen it yet. This time, using a Daft Punk track instead of just classical as I did back in 2014. Should not be...- Archimago

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up
Sorry I might have missed further discussion of this point in the thread. But before this paragraph becomes entrenched in the audiophile mythology, I would very much like to test this assertion! Anyone have a WAV/FLAC, maybe in 192kHz of 2 pulses separated by 20usec where that 20usec...- Archimago

LH Labs Geek Out v2 Discussion Thread
Got my Geek Out V2 standard edition last week... A few initial impressions: http://archimago.blogspot.com/2015/08/preview-look-at-light-harmonic-geek-out.html So far, an enjoyable DAC. Nice power, sound pretty accurate, plastic enclosure not too hot to the touch.- Archimago

INTERNET BLIND TEST: Linear vs. Minimum Phase Upsampling Filters.
Hello everyone! I know some people have strong feelings about digital upsampling filters and there's especially the notion of minimum phase filters being superior or more "natural" sounding than the typical linear filters used in most DACs. The main reason given has been the idea that one can...- Archimago

AudioQuest Dragonfly Review : Affordable, Outstanding, Tiny DAC / Amp
BA_D_R: Just had a listen to that 16kHz tone with the Dragonfly 1.2 using 62-ohm Sony MDR-V6 and also 300-ohm Sennheiser HD800. Sounds fine with both. No unusual distortion/noise, just annoying high pitched tone :-) I managed to borrow this unit from my friend, ran some measurements and...- Archimago

TEST: Can you hear the difference between 24-bits vs. 16-bits?
Hi everyone, I know there are strong opinions already on this and I'm sure a number of folks have already tested for themselves. However, I am interested in gathering data on this so I put up a little test package and survey form on-line about a month back...- Archimago

Testing audiophile claims and myths
Hey guys, nice thread! Admittedly, I haven't been able to go through all 139 pages yet... Just wanted to drop a note that over the last 6 months or so, I've put up a blog to document a few things for myself from an objective perspective (after years of exposure to audiophilia) and put my...- Archimago

Teac Reference Line UD-501 USB DAC "DSD"
Quote: Thanks for posting these results Eraser! The Lynx Hilo is a much better ADC than the E-MU I used so these results looks fantastic. Nice to see confirmation for that frequency response & noise level change with the digital filter OFF - same thing I found and correlates with...- Archimago

Quote: Yup, that's me... But what I'm looking for there is the firmware to my CM6631A USB-to-SPDIF box due to Mac compatibility issue... No relation to the E1 (in fact the E1 works great with my Mac).- Archimago

Asus Essence One Headphone Amp/DAC (CeBIT 2011)
Quote: Thanks for the response ASUSXONAR. IMO, upsampling is by nature more important in the lower sampling rates. If anything, I think the algorithm should bias towards better sound with the 44/48 rates and generally try to leave the hi-res stuff alone. Furthermore, the fact that...- Archimago

Asus Essence One Headphone Amp/DAC (CeBIT 2011)
ASUS: If you guys are looking into this frequency response issue with upsampling, why not just implement a minimum phase filter with slow roll off from about 18kHz for the 44/48kHz sampling rates? This is of course a bit of what the big boys like Esoteric, Ayre and Meridian have been doing...- Archimago

Asus Essence One Headphone Amp/DAC (CeBIT 2011)
Quote: Thanks stv014! Nice measurements and discussion. I'll have a better look at the setup later this week and your detailed results when I have some time. The MAIN thing I remain concerned about is that frequency response issue with upsampling at 44kHz (and probably 48). I hope...- Archimago

Asus Essence One Headphone Amp/DAC (CeBIT 2011)
Quote: Yup, I'm quite weary these days about the purely subjective reviews since rarely have I seen these reviewers taking a stand on real problems like the high frequency roll off... They'd need to prove it, and that requires hooking up the gear to have a look objectively. Even worse...- Archimago

Asus Essence One Headphone Amp/DAC (CeBIT 2011)
Guys, I decided to put up a blog page with my XONAR E1 measurements with full commentary on these frequency anomalies... IMO the frequency roll off at 24/96 and 24/192 are a bit unusual as well even apart from the upsampling issue. Anyhow, I do hope ASUS has a look at this and come up...- Archimago

Asus Essence One Headphone Amp/DAC (CeBIT 2011)
Quote: Interesting Whit3Rav3n, I'll have to test mine again. I thought the USB was OK on mine... Nonetheless, for sure the TosLink and coaxial's are being lowpassed when upsampled below 15kHz which is AUDIBLE and IMO a significant firmware bug when playing 16/44 audio. ASUS -...- Archimago

To ASUSXONAR, Can we get a comment on the issue around frequency drop off with upsampling using the TosLink and Coaxial inputs as reported on this post: http://www.head-fi.org/t/542563/asus-essence-one-headphone-amp-dac-cebit-2011/1230#post_9113301 The early frequency drop off is...- Archimago
