SE846 "Less is More" by UNISPEED
Remove only the foam. The filter at the base of the blue filter remains untouched. It's actually a white knowles filter without the barrel. The end result is about 900 ohms of resistance. Please take note that in the very last step, when inserting the filter barrel, the filter element must...- unispeed

SE846 "Less is More" by UNISPEED
The end result needs to look like this. The filter cloth needs to be closer to the outside. This is a revision for STEP 5. I've also added a note before the picture of STEP 5 that outlines that the filter barrel should be pressed in with the filter cloth facing down so that the filtering cloth...- unispeed

SE846 "Less is More" by UNISPEED
This would explain why the plastic inserts are fitting so tight. Even a 2.05mm is not enough as the final bore. You need to find a drill bit that is actually 2.1mm. Your best bet is ordering a set of small drill bits and finding one from that set that is 2.1mm measured with your caliper.- unispeed

SE846 "Less is More" by UNISPEED
Due to how thin the wall of the plastic housing becomes after drilling it, it is quite delicate. My final bit size is 2.1mm. In the past I used a 2.05mm bit to bore the plastic tube. If you have access to a 2.05mm then follow these steps: 2.05mm bit drilling the plastic tube OUTSIDE the...- unispeed

Look at steps 3 and step 4. In step 3 you drill the insert outside the nozzle. Then in step 4 you push the insert in the nozzle and redrill. Step 3 stretches the plastic but does not give the final bore. Step 4 does not allow for any stretching and will give you the correct final bore. If...- unispeed

SE846 "Less is More" by UNISPEED
This is a direct successor to my "Engineer Mod" which can be found here: https://www.head-fi.org/threads/se846-filter-mod.802350/post-15138382 It is called "Less is More" due to its relative simplicity when compared to my other mods, however it sounds anything but simple. Its for those who...- unispeed

SE846 Filter mod
After maaany hours with both version A and Version B of my ENGINEER MOD and feedback from people who have heard both, I STRONGLY recommend Version B to anyone interested in performing this mod. It really is a superior configuration, especially if used with foam eartips. I have amended the...- unispeed

hahaha, thanks for the words of wisdom. ...unless of course I can convince her that spending large amounts of money on personal audio equipment is an investment...then again that might be a double edge sword as well - unispeed

SE846 Filter mod
Sorry guys, I've been gone for the last week or so because I recently got married. As far as version A or B the main difference is that version A uses a brown cloth and Version B uses a white cloth. Version B is what I prefer. I especially reccomend it if you are more attracted to the stock...- unispeed

The plastic insert has an Inlet and an Outlet. The inlet is the side with the rubber o-ring and the filter cloth. The outlet is the side closest to your eardrum. If you push the foam a couple of mm towards the inlet it will become less efficient and let more high frequency content. However...- unispeed

The foam on the stock blue filters is too far out for many. Simply pushing the foam in a few mm on each side equally will yield more treble. Push it all the way in and it will yield quite a bit more treble (Trishd mod). My opinion on the stock filters (I have bought many to mod) is that no 2...- unispeed

SE846 Filter mod
@csglinux Just thinking out loud here looking at some of your graphs between Trishd using Blue insert and Trishd using White insert; White (680) cloth with 2 foams directly in front of it (Trishd Blue insert) has more sub-bass and bass than Brown (1K) cloth with the same 2 foams in front of it...- unispeed

SE846 Filter mod
So you basically have a stock blue filter (white cloth) with revision 1 of my mod + the external vent. The standard mod is already mid-forward with the removal of the stock cloth at the inlet. By having the white cloth at the inlet you will be taming the mids a bit but then adding them back...- unispeed

SE846 Filter mod
@csglinux I was able to slow down your .gif file enough to see what was going on. It seems that outlet diameter is not the only thing that is affecting the shift you originally spotted in the Knowles filters. At a depth of 8mm (basically where the stock filter sits?) the shift disappears...- unispeed

SE846 Filter mod
Thanks for the visual data! Now, that's an idea! If done this way you would have to pull the filter barrel out. I think either Sonion or Knowles have a tool for that. I started to get the feeling that I needed to have 2 dampers when I found myself having to compromise on depth. Deeper...- unispeed

The engineer mod has been improved further. It now retains an important feature the real Engineers at Shure cleverly designed in the plastic barrel itself. Updated steps can be found here: https://www.head-fi.org/threads/se846-filter-mod.802350/page-15#post-15138382 If anyone in the...- unispeed
