Roll Call for Team AKG
I have a pair of k501s and k601s. The k501 is a really well balanced headphone that just lacks a little bit of bass impact. I really like them when I'm working and I want to be surrounded by sound as opposed to pummeled by it.- dmort

Does this configuration make sense?
Yeah - I knew that from the violectric. I guess I could get an app on my phone and try volume matching the inputs to see whether I can really discern a difference. Regardless though, I'd like to step up the dac and I think with the above configuration, it doesn't make sense to elimate the XDA-1...- dmort

Yes, its that marv golden site you linked a ways back in this thread. I found it by chance, googling around - emailed to make sure it was in stock - and then ordered. Fast shipping, good communication, etc.- dmort

beyer dt770, 880, 990 replacement pad/cushion--softskin, gel, velour--COMPARE
Well - I got mine from a flight equipment store in San Fran - I got the edt 800 in black - threw them on this evening and I am so pleased with the purchase. My dt880s were used so having a brand new and so luxurious a pad has made the headphones feel new. I think this is going to be my main can...- dmort

My dt880s were already recabled to 4pin balanced and I'm using them with the violectric v181. I got the edt 800 pads for the dt880 (this really comfy leather pad beyer makes but is tough to find) and I'm really happy with them. I probably won't buy anything for a while but I have a friend with...- dmort

Yeah congratulations! I've been doing similar purchasing recently - trying to buy stuff that doesn't sound like my AKGs. The HD600 is on the short list for sure. (I ended up with beyer dt880 600ohm and a pair of ultrasone pro 2900).- dmort

Does this configuration make sense?
I'm posting this in the Computer Audio thread because I figure there are other computer types out there who have added other components over time, but wanted to keep their comp in the mix for versaitlity. If this isn't the right place for the thread, a mod is welcome to move it. Thanks! I've...- dmort

That's great - 100% not serious!!! I buy crazy expensive milk for my kids and while it be better for them since it lacks all sorts of dangerous chemicals, I don't think it tastes any difference than regular old milk. OJ on the other hand - don't get me started!- dmort

REVIEW: Violectric V181 balanced headphone amp
If anyone is interested, I picked up a pair of dt880s with a zynsonix 4pin cable and it sounds awesome with this amp. I've also got a pair of ultrasone 2900 and Bryan at zynsonix is going to make a balanced cable for them... I'll let you know how it sounds - the German German pairing (not the...- dmort

Well clearly you have no idea what you are evening tasting for. Those of us who have developed our taste buds know that small batch, locally raised milk, sourced from cows who receive massages 6 times a day, tastes infinitely better than just regular old milk.- dmort

REVIEW: Violectric V181 balanced headphone amp
Thanks for pointing that out! I meant low gain/volume. And you're right, I forgot about the pre-gain switches. I was using them with my k501s and k601s in single ended mode. Those AKGs are a little hard to drive. The v181 had a much easier time driving my focal spirit pros. I'm going to try...- dmort

Well, bd-usa (on ebay) cancelled my purchase - out of stock apparently (BS - it stated 1 available on ebay... I'm a little annoyed) - so I'm not going to join this crew right now.... Back to the hunt!- dmort

Stefanaudioart wrote me an essay on recabling with their cable - a cool $600. Personally, I believe in good quality interconnects, not cheap radio shack junk, but I can't fit a $600 recable into my budget. FYI.- dmort

I just bought some black yoga blocks - 12 bucks - to serve as monitor stands. Seems like the cheapest way to bring up your monitors a bit and provide some isolation. I'll take a pic when they come in!- dmort

REVIEW: Violectric V181 balanced headphone amp
I just got my v181 and set it up with my emotiva XDA-1. Balanced out to the v181, then right now I'm only listening in single ended mode as I don't own a pair of balanced headphones yet. I'm shocked by how low power the SE output is on the v181 compared to my Gilmore Lite. The GL crushes it...- dmort

Focal SPIRIT PROFESSIONAL Impressions thread
Look around on the sale forums, I see FSP and FSC fairly often. And I wouldn't count out the classic - Tyll described them pretty similar to FSP. This said, I'm very happy with the FSP however, if I had taken the time to really consider, I think I would have gone for the Classic if only for the...- dmort

Since I asked the question I'll give the answer I found: BTG will reterminate the T1 for 40 bucks + shipping with a 4 pin xlr neutrik plug. Headphone.com will do it for 50. For 100, they'll reterminate and also build a 4 pin to 1/4" short cable out of the excess T1 stock cable. I also...- dmort

I do know how to solder, I replaced the drivers and recabled a pair of esw9s, but I don't really want to mess around with such an expensive headphone... I know moon audio and headphone.com would do it, but I was wondering about other recommendations... BTG audio, anything else?- dmort

I just bought a pair of T1s direct from Beyer's ebay account - they were a demo pair at a trade show - described as essentially brand new. How do I go about having them terminated as balanced - 4 pin xlr?- dmort

Ultimately, you're going to end up with 3-4 different headphones. I think its basically inevitable, once you've got a couple of amps, you'll have a couple of phones, etc. The question is what you want next. You mentioned a pretty large budget. You could get used TH-600s or used HD700s in...- dmort

Yeah - I got very lucky. I bought a fiio e10 and then about two weeks later a Glite showed up. A bit of fast research and I went for it before I really knew what it was. Needless to say, I know now and I have no plans to part with it. That said, there's a glite on sale right now in the amps...- dmort
