May be but this is shown plugged in to the normal bias output.- edstrelow

iFi audio iCAN Phantom - Vanish into the music!
Unfortunately no tests of high bias electrostatics, which are certainly the norm for Stax.- edstrelow

Damping Mechanical Energy Distortion of STAX and other phones with SORBOTHANE and other materials.
I disagree on several points you raise. Sorbotane is not simply a decoupler material. Read some of the literature put out by the company https://www.insoles-sorbothane.com/sorbothane-safeguards-critical-nasa-components-from-damage-during-launch-isnt-each-step-you-take-just-as-critical/ or...- edstrelow

Damping Mechanical Energy Distortion of STAX and other phones with SORBOTHANE and other materials.
You are right, it doesn't stick well on its own. It needs something to stick it. Some come with 3M self stick 2 sided tape. Alternatively several materials are recommended by Sorbothane (the company.) I have been using Lord 7650 sold be Ellsworth, it is expensive and somewhat messy but works...- edstrelow

Damping Mechanical Energy Distortion of STAX and other phones with SORBOTHANE and other materials.
Greetings friend! I have been off these forums for some time. Basically I got what I needed and don't care to argue with people who aren't even prepared to try these mods, which are actually pretty inexpensive. Here is a post I just did on the high-end site in regard to the $5,000 Focal...- edstrelow

Damping Mechanical Energy Distortion of STAX and other phones with SORBOTHANE and other materials.
"Sorbothane is excellent in the high duro measurements but its expensive and doesn't stick well." Actually it hardly sticks at all, it needs either 3m double sided tape or Lord industrial glue (you can get the precise make from my other posts) I got onto from talking to a tech advisor at...- edstrelow

New Focal Utopia for 2022: impressions
I have been off for some time from these forums for some time now. Essentially I got what I needed some years back when I delved into the problems of headshell and speaker cabinet resonance, and got some good answers, namely they need a lot of damping...- edstrelow

Damping Mechanical Energy Distortion of STAX and other phones with SORBOTHANE and other materials.
I have been off this thread for quite a while, mostly because I felt I had figured out how to handle sorbothane damping and had come up with a general understanding of the physics. The latter is basic Newtonian physics, "for every action (force) in nature there is an equal and opposite...- edstrelow

Damping Mechanical Energy Distortion of STAX and other phones with SORBOTHANE and other materials.
" I came across this reading about HE400S mods, since i finally bought a modern ortho. I just wanted to say, as a senior member of Team Cheap Bastards, that I'm disappointed to be the first person to mention Peel-n-Seal, Dynamat's affordable cousin. Got most of a roll of it here. Used a few...- edstrelow

Damping Mechanical Energy Distortion of STAX and other phones with SORBOTHANE and other materials.
I haven't added anything here for some time. Basically I have pretty much solved the damping issues problem with my Stax phones and have been working more with speakers. These sobothane mods remain the best and cheapest improvement in sound you are going to find and I expect in the next few...- edstrelow

The Stax Thread III
Thanks for the suggestion. I may give this a try if I can't get a new cable or it breaks again. The only tricky part seems to be cutting the strain relief part down the middle.- edstrelow

The Stax Thread III
Indeed you are correct, my friend. I finally determined that the fault is a broken wire either in the strain relief section of the cable or further down in the cable itself. This was the same problem that caused me to buy the previous replacement cord 2 years ago. I bought the phones...- edstrelow

The Stax Thread III
I am having an odd problem with one of my 007 drivers. It developed an intermittent fault a few months ago so I opened the earcup and checked all the soldered contacts. I ended up replacing the thin wires that connect from the cable (which was replaced about 2 years ago) to the driver and there...- edstrelow

The Sennheiser Orpheus 2? A First Look At The Sennheiser HE-1 (The New Orpheus)
The second paragraph talks about replacing the pads, headband padding and tubes. Presumably this is not all a hygiene issue. I tried to make it clear that I am speculating about Sennheiser's use of mechanical damping in these phones. However, I am not speculating about mechanical damping...- edstrelow

The Sennheiser Orpheus 2? A First Look At The Sennheiser HE-1 (The New Orpheus)
What about that stuff in the middle of your pic. It sure looks like some kind of "crap." As I noted the manual is very particular about replacing this regularly, something one would rarely do in most phones. This make me speculate that its construction has some kind of damping property.- edstrelow

The Sennheiser Orpheus 2? A First Look At The Sennheiser HE-1 (The New Orpheus)
Sennheisser has figured out how to dampen vibrations in structure of their phones and has been doing it with the HD 800 for some years by using an unnamed damping material in the headband. This type of damping is not to be confused with damping backwaves and the like of sound in the chambers...- edstrelow

Damping Mechanical Energy Distortion of STAX and other phones with SORBOTHANE and other materials.
Re: sorbothane under pressure. I have been on this problem for a few years and there is even one earlier thread just dealing with the Stax SR007. I have talked a couple of times with technical reps as Sorbothane who gave me some pointers but had little to specifically discuss about speakers...- edstrelow

Damping Mechanical Energy Distortion of STAX and other phones with SORBOTHANE and other materials.
I have not been too active of late, essentially because I have achieved my goal of getting effective damping of my headphones and loudspeakers and I have thus been doing less experimenting. Now it is just a matter of waiting for the rest of the audio world to catch up. Here is my headphone...- edstrelow

Maxx134 Looks like the outside of my Stax SRX 3 which I covered the same way. I cannot stress too much that covering the pieces with 4 layers of electrical tape magnifies the damping effects. hat is the principle of constrained damping.- edstrelow

I wouldn't say that the surface does no absorbtion but I doubt it is significant. The problem is, I believe, sometimes called impedance mismatch. Airborne sounds striking the surface of sorbothane are going to mostly bounce off the surface and not get damped. You can of course dampen airborne...- edstrelow
