Yes. I also had to change the "Output to headphones" option from "All Audio" to "Chat Audio." It's an important step, as I found out, as neither the virtual surround nor the EQ presets work without it.

I decided to get the Astro Mixamp. One thing I've noticed is the excessive reverb the amp creates when in virtual surround mode. Reading another thread on here about it, apparently it's normal for the Mixamp. The audio is definitely more positional now, though. I'll spend some more time with it.

So many of those have bad reviews.    Other than that hideously expensive one, it looks like the only good one was the Tritton AX 720, and it doesn't support virtual surround for stereo headphones.
