I don't think these are going to work for me, a decent amp would cost about the same amount as these headphones. I'll probably go back to my original plan of getting some SR80s. I might sell these now that the price went back up.

I just got them and I'm trying them out. Driving these without an amp has not been a problem at all, I just turned up the volume a couple of notches using my onboard (Realtek ALC888) sound. I can also run these off my sansa clip even though the volume is at 80%. These are not bass monsters...

I'm really thinking about buying one. Do they absolutely require an amp to be usable? I'd be running them off the onboard (ALC888) sound on my computer and maybe my sansa clip.

I've never heard of a HD212 non pro and I don't see one on Sennheiser's website. You might have just seen a mislabeled HD212pro.

"Rooster" by Alice in Chains, it's actually about the Vietnam war and it has a very military feel to it IMO. "Counting Bodies Like Sheep to the Rhythm of the War Drum" by A Perfect Circle has kind of a marching rhythm to it.
