My guess is that Sennheiser thought that not having them fall off when in use was more important than ease of replacement. Sennheiser is a large company with talented designers & engineers - if they wanted to they could have thought of a way to have both - ease of replacement AND sturdy enough...

I apologize, that’s what I thought you were inferring. Please don’t take offense. I respect your opinion because you chose the Sennheiser HD-800S. You have excellent taste in headphones! ;)

I find it troubling to hear one issue a blanket statement such as “tubes are better than solid-state when using the Sennheiser HD-800S”. I have used both tubes and solid-state to power my HD-800S (and the HD-820), and the most I’ll say is that if using the best tube or solid state headphone amps...

But - I found the closed back Sennheiser HD-820 delivered a slight but significant improvement in sound qualit over their HD-800S. Plus, i find the HD820 more comfortable. Solid-state vs. tubes affect on sound quality, HD800S vs. HD-820 comfort, your mileage may vary ;).

I’ve used a tube headphone amplifier with the HD-800S, the WA-2 by Woo Audio. Maybe that is a less expensive amp than the HA-300 v2, but still, tubes or solid- state, it didn’t change my opinion of these Sennheiser ‘phones.

I’m no help in this matter. My headphone amps include a Pass Labs HPA-1 and a Woo Audio WA-2. Yes, one can spend more on headphone amplifiers, but these two suit me just fine. My headphones include the open-back Grado PS-2000e and Oppo PM-1 (planar magnetic), and closed back Sennheiser HD-820...

I also have the HD-800S, the apex predictor over all the other headphones in my collection. I am very lucky that I’m listening to the HD-800S with very, very good equipment. I have found that with the best gear the HD-800S needs no EQ. The best headphone amps I use have no EQ on them, anyway...

I’m seriously thinking of “upgrading” to the HD-820, mostly because of its closed back design. I realize that its sound quality is “as good but different” than the ‘800. But I trust that Sennheiser will come through for me, they haven’t disappointed me in the past. So, does anyone want to buy...

T i had the WA 33 in my system for a month or so, a loaner. Used it as a preamp, too while it was here, even tho a bit noisy. I eventually I settled on two, the tube: WA2, solid-state, Pass HPA-1. Love both, but use the WA2 more often, despite its lower price.
