Classical music discussion, what do you like?
You know when I first got their complete box set, I thought they sounded overly 'thick'. But over the past few years of going back to them, I have come to really like the sound. The recording is excellent sound quality wise. Still unsure about their Beethoven SQs though. On the Mozart quartets...- SunTanScanMan

Classical music discussion, what do you like?
I really like the Talich Quartet's version - I have the La Dolce Volta label. Also the Janáček Quartet's version - which was included in the 'Janáček Quartet: Complete Recordings' set on DG. I found the version on YT below:- SunTanScanMan

Classical music discussion, what do you like?
I watched this too when it came up on my YT feed - as well as the other two conductors. She is more receptive and emotive than the other two students. Really enjoyed watching her work. I learnt how demanding the job of the conductor is - not to mention how relentlessly demanding Beethoven's...- SunTanScanMan

Best classical recordings...ever!
Enjoyed this all Russian set by the Borodin Quartet. Hadn't heard the Stravinsky pieces before. There's another clip of the same concert of them playing the Tchaikovsky string quartet 1 which is also worth looking up imo.- SunTanScanMan

Classical music discussion, what do you like?
^ That book's been on my list for a while - had started the Swafford book, but currently on hold due to exam commitments On the LvB quartets - the 'democracy' of the compositions is one of the things that struck me in my early encounters, it still strikes me now - that is, how all four...- SunTanScanMan

Hadn't heard any of Zelenka's music - thanks. But as soon as I heard the oboe, knew it was Holliger.- SunTanScanMan

The Beyerdynamic DT880 Discussion thread
I'm using an SS amp with my DT880 without issues. Meier amps are well regarded on both the performance as well as price front. I find the hardware crossfeed helpful in making listening sessions more comfortable. I am using the Corda Classic amp, but the Corda Jazz is also well regarded - so...- SunTanScanMan

Classical music discussion, what do you like?
Shosta's SQ no.4 - music to lose yourself with. I've been coming back to the 4th time and time again these days. Picked up the Pacifica Quartet (recommended by @RRod in the best classical thread) and Beethoven Quartet's complete box sets a while back. The former is excellent, and also...- SunTanScanMan

Classical music discussion, what do you like?
I find them a completely intoxicating ride from start to finish. Its focus on tempi, rhythm and dynamics rather than a catchy melodic line - Just the backbone inner soul of the music. Sometimes melodies can become too familiar and I can find myself glazing over during my listening sessions...- SunTanScanMan

Classical music discussion, what do you like?
I don't think any big concert venues in London have a good reputation... I would say the most renowned for bad acoustics was the Royal Albert... hence those UFO disc looking things in the ceiling. I've not been to the Barbican or the RFH for ages. Personally I prefer smaller venues...- SunTanScanMan

Classical music discussion, what do you like?
Even though I'm not fully familiar with the whole cycle - I'm becoming quite fond of it. I've recently fallen in love with the 4th symphony and I really like the SQ as well as the punchiness. Strings sound like silk. Haven't heard too much of his Wiener Phil cycle. Rattle is joining LSO...- SunTanScanMan
