I'm not sure about whether or not it'll do exactly what you want, but I've found the most robust player to be Neutron Player. Worth checking out.

I use Neutron on my iphone X. I don't know about the backup size thing, I only do icloud backups anymore. But it will play just about anything effortlessly, has it's own storage folder, displays files in folder view in the correct order (not all of them do this!), and you can do some rudimentary...

Thanks - that one does work! I also found another app, called Golden Ear, that seems to have a correct folder view. I'm trying them both currently. Neutron has a relatively busy UI, and lots of bells and whistles. Golden Ear is really stripped down and basic. I'm not sure which approach I prefer...
