if u only care bout bass, grab a sin wave at around 50-80Hz and put in  some kicks, side chain them and bam, a groovy song w/ only bass. 

I think it happens to me too. 

Use at least 320kbps on portable players w/ no external dac and such (unless ur headphones are bad to begin with)

I convert FLAC/APE to 511kbps AAC for iPod/iPhone listening.   I keep MP3's the way I get them.   If I rip CD's then I just use ALAC for iPod/iPhone. Foobar2000 runs it too.
