  Not trying to sell the product, just my thoughts on why it might be a product (as the question was posed).  Through wipes will most certainly scratch the surface of a disc, and I'm guessing this device works without any physical contact.

Maybe it helps to discharge static that can build up on the disc.  Might do a bit to protect components from stray electrons.

Not making any judgments about the guys who are running this whole deal.  I also have a complete understanding of the difficulties associated with traveling and working in this type of environment.  That being said, my point comes the view of a consumer baited to wait and watch over this thread...
