Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

Jul 21, 2017 at 12:39 PM Post #22,426 of 193,954
I just received these three today:

Vali 2
Modi Multibit
Eitr

Works excellently through Mac computer. My regular set up is Gumby-Mjolnir with Audiophilleo DDC. Looking forward to comparing Eitr with Audiophilleo.

Now my problem: My iPhone and iPad are not working using Eitr neither with CCK regular nor CCK USB 3 adapters. I have tried with Tidal, Pandora, and YouTube. No sound to headphones. Visually I see the music playing as in the time is increasing on the song. iPhone is using 10.2.1 version and iPad is using latest IOS version.

If I take Eitr out of the loop and connect my iPad or iPhone directly to Mimby USB then it works great using either CCK adapter.

Is anyone else running into this issue with Eitr and iPhone and any possible solutions? Thank you.
Can anyone confirm getting Eitr to work with iPhone/iPad?

The only thing I can suggest trying is to make sure your input to the Eitr is 24/192 max. Your software may be defaulting to 32 bit and then you'll get no sound. I had that issue on my PC when I first connected it. Easy enough fix.

I'm confused.

Why should how the equipment looks matter if you are listening to the music? Speaking for myself, if I'm absorbed into a performance I'm playing back, I close my eyes and immerse myself into it.

I don't think tubes count quite the way you say. Sure, they are prominently displayed on Schiit and other gear, but they are integral to how said gear works. The original Vali had tubes hidden away, though. They weren't on display.

And, really, if you want VU meters, you can buy them separately and put them on yourself. Fair warning: VU meters cost almost as much as Vidar, which has everything to do with why they're not there. One of the stated goals of Schiit is to bring sanity to the audio world by keeping prices down.

Obviously I don't speak for Jason, but I think this issue is as closed as the power switch location issue is.

Some of us have to contend with so-called "wife approval" which means, it shouldn't even be there. Meaning, small, efficient box count number, etc, all stuffed into a media center with doors closed. In my case, it looks something like this:

:-)

Well, for spouse approval, you should stick with the Vidar and just forget the VU meters. Especially if they're going to be behind a door that's normally closed. Be glad that Schiit is so good and so affordable!

Moar Vidar impressions, please?

Update: Vidar arrived a few hours ago, and hooked up over my lunch hour (I work from home) - been running continuously since then.

Sat down for about 15 mins with it and listened to a small handful of songs.

So far, I'm pretty impressed with it...great PRAT and power, but really, really smooth too - very low "grain". Running it with Saga as mentioned previously, and keeping the tube buffer turned off for now so I can hear it "unadulterated".

More later.

Another quick Vidar impressions update:

Have had Vidar turned-on continuously for about 48 hours now. It has played music at about mid-volume (Saga) for about 16 hours total and will play probably for another 3 hours today.

I've sat down to listen for about 3 hours total, broken up over 5-6 times at varying lengths (max 1 hour).

Initially I found the sound to be powerful but smooth, maybe a little too smooth. It was a bit rolled off at either ends of the frequency spectrum. I'm thinking this is pretty typical for a new amp that hasn't been broken in fully. Now however it's starting to open up and has a bit more punch in the highs and lows but still smooth in a good way. The mid-range is also very nice and smooth and detailed.

I still feel like it needs some more breaking in time for sure, and I won't be comparing it to my 2 integrateds until after I feel it's been sufficiently broken in.

More to come...

Thank you for some very informative information. I have my C Card ready, but waiting for more reviews.

Jason,

The link to 2017 Chapter 9: Skipping a Generation on the first post is still broken. There's a typo in the Vidar tech spec. Inconsistent casing of Ohms vs ohms

I love your thoughts on your Gen 5 USB implementation, but it makes me wonder how much of it is marketing speak. What would have been Gen 4 in your mind? If Gen 5 is as good as you claim it to be, then there is a huge gap between Gen 3 and 5. What would Gen 4 be in that gap?

If Wyrd 2/Fulla 3/Modi 3 came out today, would it be on Gen 5? Also where is the Jotunheim Gen 5 USB dac?

Well, it's a generation thing. If Vidars were bigger and had big glowing romantically lit meters they would be on display along with the lava lamp. The music would come from a Revox open reel with warm glowing meters......:beerchug::L3000: and a nixie tube clock.

Meters are useful on the Revox or any recorder. Not so much for a home amplifier.

And I have a Nixie collection to become a clock and a Numitron clock.

I see the internal of Vidar amplifier and the mains transformer it seems to be "EI" type ... strange ... was hoping for a toroidal transformer.

This means the amplifier will not sound good? No ... respected brands works with EI transformers, Luxman and Accuphase, by example.

But generally, good EI transformers are expensive ... maybe i'm wrong, i thought toroidal will be the transformer type for Vidar.

Thanks for the answer ... this is like doctors, when different doctors say different things about the same case. I don't know much about it and have to decide who's right :-)

See http://newarchive.cambridgeaudio.com/pages/toroidal-transformers

Good that we're talking about amplifiers
