Astell & Kern KANN - DAP with Massive Storage & Battery

Has anyone been able to compare the KANN with the Questyle QP1R?

I'm a big fan of the QP1R's sound, but the vast storage capacity of the KANN (plus the addition of streaming & balanced out) has caught my attention. Having just read Mr Pinky Powers' superb review (& discounting the QP2R on grounds of the massively increased price & reduced storagde) I have a sense the KANN is calling as my next DAP.
I have found that the Kann grows on you. I have always enjoyed the A&K house sound. The Kann has a lot of great features. It's balanced out has a lot of power to drive some of the more difficult hp's. I also have the Opus #2 and the sound quality differences aren't that great. Based only on SQ I would give the Opus #2 a slight, very slight nod. Having said that, my Opus #2 is for sale. I will have a Kann review forthcoming but I have been lazy recently so I have others to catch up on first.

I tried to use KANN as USB DAC with my PC but had problems with provided driver under Windows 10. Was someone successful?
Been speaking to Lithrai on PM, but wanted to follow up with a post in case anyone else was having issues using KANN as a USB DAC with Windows 10.

Windows 10 Creators Edition should automatically pick up KANN as a USB DAC when connected through the microUSB cable since Microsoft has provided updated Android drivers in the latest release. You DO NOT have to install the AK USB DAC drivers listed in the support section of the AK website.

Once you connect to the PC by microUSB, you also need to remember to enable the DAC connection on the player via the "DAC" icon on the quick settings menu or by going to settings, USB Connection, DAC Input. Also please make sure sound output is selected as KANN in the Windows Control Panel under sound.

Also, we recommend you directly connect to a USB port on the back of the computer which is directly connected to the motherboard rather than through a hub or front panel connection (which usually has an additional cable connecting that port to the motherboard) for the best experience. That also goes for file transfers.

If anyone has any issues, please feel free to post or PM me.

For mac users, which software do you guys use to upload music and organize photos? For some reason the Android File Transfer seems to be really cumbersome and crashes on my MBP.
If by photos you mean album covers, I use kid3 to update my music files with album art. There may be a way to configure it to grab the album art automatically, but I just drag it in from Amazon. Android File Transfer crashes for me all the time too so I'm also interested if anyone has any good recommendations on alternatives. In the meantime I just remove the cards and load them up directly through a card reader. I keep albums I know I'll never delete on the Kann's on board storage.

I used Commander One PRO, which is available on the Mac App Store. It's not cheap, but it's reliable and I've had none of the problems I have had with Android File Transfer.

Are you looking on the desktop or mobile store?... It's on the desktop store - & the 'Pro' version is a whopping £28.99 anyway!
That's the one, and yes it is expensive! I used it to fill my AK Kann, and it was much easier than when I had an AK240 and was using Android File Transfer, which would randomly fail. Not sure if you get the MTP support in the non-PRO version, but I think you can download direct from their website to check out - just Google "Commander One".

Bluetooth issue: Here's my first encounter with a real issue with my Kann. It wont play anything dsd 256 over bluetooth. It shows the devices are connected, but no sound comes out of the headphone (Sony mdr 1000x). Kann shows the tracks are playing. No problems wired through the same headphones, same tracks. Tried it out with other bluetooth enabled speakers, same problem. Anyone else encounter this problem?

Sorry, have not been trough all 52 pages and don't know if this was already covered.
how good is the bluetooth section of the kann? not in regards of sound qualitiy as this may be different in many ears. I mean in terms of reach and stability, just asking as this is very poor on my ak70

It's one of the best I've seen. I was able to walk a good 15 feet away and still get steady connection.

Because of the limited bandwidth of Bluetooth, DSD cannot be played back over Bluetooth. Bluetooth aptX HD can support up to 24-bit/48kHz playback.

Hi Jason, there was what appears to be bug that was discussed earlier in the thread. When browsing by folder, if you organize your collection using alphabetical folders (26 folders labelled A-Z), a folder titled just "A" or "S" will not appear. I've worked around it by changing them to "A1" and "S1" but it might be something A&K might want to look into.

Also, this isn't a bug but it'd be great if someone could look into it. I usually use the following naming convention for my files:
Artist Name - Album - Track No - Song Title
I sometimes have songs where the artist name and album title are really long, so I can't actually tell which song is which as the name of the file is truncated in the file browser. It'd be great if the text could scroll or, even better, if the size of the text is automatically adjusted to the length of the file name so more of it could be displayed.

Other than that, it's been smooth sailing so far.

That's what I assumed.

Is it possible to down-sample in real-time, so at least the song can be played at some bitrate?
