FS: Sonos ZonePlayer 80 Bundle
A nice little tax snafu (thanks Honda relocation gurus) has caused me to let go of this and my homebuilt CD player (ad forthcoming) in the interest of keeping myself out of debt. Purchased this in October but have only had one of the two zone players hooked up for any extended period of time...- strohmie

Miracle in the Mine
I don't know if there's been a thread about this, but as of yesterday thirteen miners were missing after an explosion deep in a West Virginia mine. After one was found dead earlier today, the remaining twelve have been found alive after a day and a half of desperate searching. Truly amazing.- strohmie

Visibility of CD laser output
Just got a new laser assembly to replace the dead one in my old D-303 -- for anyone's reference it's the SF-89 from Sony, and can be used to replace the laser assembly in the D-303, D-515, or D-35 -- and just today tossed it into my player. What I noticed when testing it out, though, is that...- strohmie

Shadow of the Colossus -- great googly moogly
And no, I'm not gaping at a colossus standing in front of me in the game right now. I'm just really freaking impressed. I haven't had much time/money to buy games recently, but I had to make an exception for this one. Freaking glad that I did. After my first full run through the game, I have...- strohmie

Denon DCP-150: Repairing the King of All PCDPs
I posted this in the DIY repair thread, but figured I might actually get more support within a separate thread: So I bought a dud DCP-150 the other day, and now the question is how I go about getting it back on its feet again. The player didn't play past about ten minutes of audio, and...- strohmie

I can't buy a break (Zen Neeon)
So I decide to buy myself an mp3 player after the last one I tried to buy (Rio Carbon) refused to work entirely -- I couldn't even turn the thing on, and refused to buy another after that. So I bought a Neeon off eBay from a Singapore seller, and got it today. The thing at least turns on, but...- strohmie

Funny (?) thought as I search for a job
I'm one take-home final away from bring a certified Master of Science in Electrical Engineering. Which means I need to get my @$$ paid. My first thought was to go back to the Maryland area and find myself a job at a company around there, but there's little for a guy who wants to work in the...- strohmie

Dynahi PSU troubleshooting
Alright, it's down to crunch time for my CD player (which I'm using as a final project for a lab class, and am presenting tomorrow), and the last thing left is the Dynahi power supply. Ran into a problem with it and figured here would be the best place to start, as I haven't really gone in-depth...- strohmie

3/13 - Potential Urbana mini-meet
I've had my CD player running for a few days now and wanted to hear some preliminary opinions on how it sounds from other people (I am currently sans headamp and phones). I know I still have ground hum at higher volumes that I need to get rid of, but I'm more interested in how the transport and...- strohmie

Strohmie *LOVES* college basketball
Ah, could the week get any better? Not only do the Illini go 25-0 to tie their school record winning streak, beating perhaps their toughest rival in the process, but my ol' Terps take out Duke for the second time this season and secure themselves a place in the NCAA Tournament. Man, I...- strohmie

Next milestone cometh -- 100,000 threads
Surprised I haven't seen a thread about this yet -- we have just over 200 threads until we reach 100,000. (of course, if I'm blind, permission to delete this thread) I seem to recall the 1,000,000 post was administrative. 'Twould be funny if that happened this time as well.- strohmie

Huh...Amon Tobin scored Splinter Cell 3
This one was news to me -- Amon Tobin is one of my favorite musicians, and out of nowhere he decides to jump into the video game music scene with this one. The game itself isn't being released for more than a month, but the CD "Chaos Theory: Splinter Cell 3 Soundtrack" was released today, with... -

Hello and Goodbye to my Rio Carbon
Went out today and bought myself a Rio Carbon, as I had been hoping to do sometime before going back east for the winter (would certainly help with the 10+ hour drive). Got home, charged it, and got everything installed on my computer. Turn it on. Stuck on Rio Carbon screen for over a minute...- strohmie

CD player design continued -- R-core transformers, anyone?
Putting together the final building blocks in my CD player (points to signature). CD player regulators complete, DAC complete. Now the final part is putting it together, and a main factor in that is the type and location of the transformers I end up using. The basic choices are: -- Toroidal...- strohmie

Help me troubleshoot a Jung super-regulator
I shot an e-mail to the designer of the boards I use, but figured I'd post here as well. I'm having an output voltage issue I'm having with my +5V Jung super regulator supply for the CD player I'm building. Rather than the expected 5V, I'm getting 4.38V. My first thought because of the .62V drop...- strohmie

...Phinnaeus? The baby names thread.
This is a question to any parents out in the audience about how you named your kids. When you named your child(ren), what was a consideration? Names of relatives? Old friends? Likelihood the child would get pummeled by bullies because of his awkward moniker? This was inspired by the recent...- strohmie

RIP, ODB
This one came as a shock -- ODB, aka Ol' Dirty person, aka Russell Jones, died in a recording studio at the age of 35 after complaining of chest pains. Especially unfortunate considering he just got out of his prison sentence. Certainly one of the more entertaining characters in modern music... -
SinglePower Amplifiers: Claims and Final Discussion

Any Sony portable audio addicts want a hat to prove it?
Just saw this on eBay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...332101249&rd=1 ...I think there might be enough nuts on this board that buying and distributing these hats might be appropriate, if there's enough interest. Of course, for most of us, perhaps it should say "DISCMAN" but this...- strohmie

Let's make it official -- best Headphone and Line Out Sony PCDPs?
Okay, I've come to a decision -- I'm picking up the torch from Duncan and taking charge of the portable and transportable CDP review game. And my goal is to close out the Sony review game for good since it's been so thoroughly covered around these parts. I'm sure I can get some help from the...- strohmie

eBay Auction Alert -- poorly listed ATH-W1000s
(I'm still not positive on the posting etiquette for auctions considering they always end up getting moved due to excess discussion...) http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...723990474&rd=1 Opening bid is a reasonable $300, with just six hours remaining. Snap-in capacitors?
I just today got an old Sony PIX-100 multimedia CD player to see how it sounded as a transportable unit. I listened for a few minutes before cracking the top and taking a look at the innards. I luckily only broke one piece inside in so doing. But anyways, I pulled the audio board out and...- strohmie
