This sound card uses the venerable ak4396 dac, and this mod bypasses the analog out section with a passive transformer. About $350 total, but that's using top of the line output transformers. I'm frankly astonished at the sound quality this thing is putting out. Modified as outlined here...

I thought I'd chime in. This is ALL IMO only! I don't visit head-fi much, but in the times I did, it has always been an amicable place to get info/advice on helping me enjoy what I love doing, listening to music. I just went through the two threads concerning this debacle and all I can say...

I meant I went for the budget-moderate upgrades. The base maestro goes for about 2400 I think? So with the tube/cap/pot upgrades I pushed a little over 3k. The 2400 pricing is only promotional I believe.
