Yes, the low gain improved things. Its not clipping now, but it still fells like its struggling. Instrument separation, soundstage and detail suffer badly.     Im feeding it with usb, I have dac/amp combo, so thats my source.

I agree to some degree, but they're focusing on the wrong problem. Its mastering not the bit rate thats the problem. Things have been improving since 2005, apparently the loudness wars peaked then and its getting quieter ever since.

  Any of those already mentioned will make a fine choice. No need to over think it, the dt990 250 pro or the cheaper Senns mentioned hold their resale value so well you can try them out at very little cost.
