Antony & The Johnsons
In spite of the lack of discussion, I know there has to be some Antony fans here on Head-Fi; his albums are not only phenomenal musically, but are well recorded. Swanlights was just released a month ago, and it doesn't go long without a listen. -
EMI shielding for wires after the fact
Would applying adhesive EMI shielding foil to some unshielded wires give at least part of the EMI resistance that truly shielded wires would give, or is it a moot point? It's a point to point application.- LeChuck

Impressions: Prototype Triad Audio HeadCode
I took delivery of my long awaited (since December) HeadCode about a week and a half ago, and have put in substantial listening time since then with both my HD-650's and my AH-D5000's. Because I have no basis to make a critical comparison (except for a Total Bithead, which would be a useless...- LeChuck

Build pics of my prototype Headcode from Phill LaRocco
Update (4/26/08) - Phill has finished the amp. Scroll to post #31 to see pictures. -------------------- I thought I'd share some build pics of the new one-of-a-kind Headcode prototype Phill LaRocco is building me. I'm told it's quite superior to the Headcode DM it's replacing.- LeChuck

Just bought a PureAV PF30
My new apartment has absolutely awful power which causes virtually everything to be noisy. So tonight I decided to order the Belkin PureAV PF30 to see if it helps remedy the problem. It was only $89, so no major let down if it doesn't help, but I hope it does. Does anyone else here own the...- LeChuck

How do you deal with varying sensitivities in headphones?
My Denon AH-D5000's just arrived in the mail today, and they're great (expect a review comparing them to the HD 650 soon!), but I have one problem with them: sensitivity! Normal listening listening volume is around step 4 of 24 on my amp's attenuator, by step 6 it's extremely loud. Right now...- LeChuck

Suggestions for an HD-650 Lover?
I love my 650's, and I have no interest in parting with them, but I would like to expand my horizons. I'm looking for a headphone of somewhat similar character in the sub-$1000 range. Some of the options that have been suggested are D5000's and DX1000's, both of which were suggested by...- LeChuck

Replay gain album scanning by folder?
Edit: Just figured it out! For those who want to know, add this string to Album grouping pattern under preferences in Foobar: $replace(%path%,\%filename_ext%,) . Use this instead of %directoryname%, which will prevent Foobar from getting confused if you have albums (folders) with the same name...- LeChuck

Gould on Beethoven's piano concertos and other non-Bach works
Are there any other fans (or even detractors, feel free to chime in) of the Gould/Bernstein rendition of Beethoven's piano concertos? I realize this collection is hardly regarded at the canonized set, and I also own sets by Brendel and Lupu which are more "traditional" (although excellent), but... -
Woo Audio 4: A Brief Re-review (upgraded)
Introduction To begin I have to apologize for adding to the Woo Audio fire. Lately threads and posts concerning Woo Audio amps seem to be popping up on a daily basis, which I certainly don't view as a bad thing, but I know that some of you might be getting a little tired of the hysteria. I...- LeChuck

Maintaining directory structure during format conversion?
Are there any conversion programs that will allow you to maintain directory structure for the output files? All of my music is organized in directories in the format of Artist/Album but not all of it is tagged, which makes doing mass conversions difficult.- LeChuck

Help me identify this movie trailer...
I saw this movie trailer a while back, maybe on Apple, maybe somewhere else but I can't think of the name of the movie anymore. The premise was a bunch of guys are in a room, each with a gun that they point at each other's heads. When a light goes off they each fire their guns. Some of the...- LeChuck

Busoni - The Piano Concerto
I had a CD of Garrick Ohlsson performing Busoni's Piano Concerto in C-major with the Cleveland Orchestra sitting here for the longest time, and for whatever reason I never got around to giving the work a listen until now. Man was I missing out! I'm actually kind of embarrassed as a classical... -
GS-X worth it for single ended use?
I love my Woo4, but after much consideration I have decided that my heart lies in the razor sharp world of solid sate, and I also just don't like messing with tubes. I have been mulling over various solid state amp options; most notably the Headamp GS-X and the Rudistor RPX-33. I feel like...- LeChuck

I just pulled the trigger on a bunch of portable gear...
With my main system stabilized for the time being (with the exception of tube rolling), I decided to upgrade my portable setup. I was using a Rio Carbon, and while I'm sad to see it go, there are features that I want that the player can not provide - namely more storage space, line-out, and...- LeChuck

WooAudio 4 Impressions (pics)
Update 11/15/06 I just had my first tube-rolling experience with the Woo Audio 4. I swapped out the stock JJ ECC82's for a pair of RFT's, which I got for ~$60 from the Tube Depot. Just as a side comment about the Tube Depot, I called them before buying and they were very helpful in answering...- LeChuck

Audiophile USB S/PDIF Problem
I have a weird problem with my M-Audio Audiophile USB: I can't get the S/PDIF output to work. The device should be working properly since the analog outputs work without a hitch. here's a general summary of where I'm at. -I tried two DACs, the "lock" lights do not illuminate on either of them...- LeChuck

Hum and hiss... what's causing what?
Yesterday I received my new WooAudio 4 amplifier, it sounds and looks absolutely stunning, but I've run into somewhat of an annoyance. The amplifier seems to producing two audible, but characteristically different sounds. The first sound is a hiss, and the second is a low pitched hum. Both of...- LeChuck

How to ensure 44.1Khz Playback?
I was up until recently using the M-Audio Transit as my transport, but because my current DAC only accepts coaxial input I had to ditch the TOSLINK-only Transit. To fill the void I bought into the PC-Link from DIYKits, which is a simple device that takes USB and converts it into S/PDIF with both...- LeChuck

Looking for cheap, high gain, bookshelf speakers
While the Woo4 is primarily a headphone amplifier, it has a secondary feature as a speaker amplifier for high gain speakers. Jack Woo recommends 92db and above. So what's available? Those $47 best-buy speakers caught my eye, but they're 90db, not a huge difference but I wouldn't mind paying a...- LeChuck

Leslie Howard - The Complete Liszt
This week I completed my collection when I bought volume 38 of Leslie Howard's 57 volume (95-disc) complete Liszt recordings for solo piano. I'm going to guess that I am the only Head-Fi member with the complete set (although I don't have the 'New Discoveries' supplementry volumes), but I'm sure...
