I use my HD598 directly out of my Macbook Pro, and they are phenomenal (when used with FLAC files in Audirvana Plus)   I'm just about to order the Magni 2 Uber / Modi 2 Uber.   Ill let ya know the difference when I get em :)

You're using iTunes with your 598? If you aren't using lossless files (.aiff) then what's the point? My entire iPod is .aiff files, but I would still don't use it with my HD598s..   I would also recommend the E17, for portability.

I'm conflicted.    I was dead set on the Vali, but now I just don't know.   I might have to just buy both (Magni 2 Uber, Vali) and return the one I like less.

I've heard from numerous sources that the O2/ODAC is very neurtral and "cold" sounding compared to a combo like the magni2/modi2 or the vali/modi2.   Can anyone attest to this?

This is probably correct. It's not the phones burning in, it's your ears getting used to them and adjusting to them. It took me about a week I think.

I don't know if it's psychosomatic or not, but mine took about a week of listening for about 1-2 hours a day.

A+ has nothing to do with iTunes, although it gives you the option to integrate your iTunes library, which I do not do.
