Just got my iPod classic 120 GB. Sound is quite nice through the Grado HP1000/HP2 headphones. I'll get proper in-ears for this soon, but now it seems that the sound quality is really nice in this model. I once tried the 3rd Gen iPod and was badly underwhelmed then.

Transistors and tubes do not amplify sound.

Why don't you try the second gain stage to ensure that the power tubes are run with enough current? Just use some low gain tubes at that position.

A decent quality dedicated soundcard might suffice. I am using M-Audio Audiophile 2496 and I am quite satisfied with it.
