I think I also used a small flat screewdriver at the side of the knob to remove it, that get only some tiny scratches.

Maybe it will get off if using some rubber between your fingers and the knob or at least wash your hands and also the knob before (dish soap will be fine) and be really dry, for better grip. It will need some quite much force to remove it from the volume attenuators shaft.
