Casting and Molding cIEM backups, replacements, etc from existing Etymotic cIEM?
Hi DIYers, There are a bunch of threads about DIY custom IEMs, from the high tech to the basic "shove a cheap IEM into some Radian goo." The latter I quite like but more for the security of the fit than any massive improvement in sound. But the higher tech versions of taking an...- econ

IEM vs Over-ear vs Speakers: hearing safety
Good topic and would love more info myself. I would not automatically place much weight on a generalist MD's opinion given how much received wisdom, even in medicine, is semi-wrong (but not damaging so also not problematic; unless you substitute Big headphones and crank them, their advice...- econ

Emotiva mini-x a-100 with AKG K1000s? What about Tripath-based amps?
You can't run single-ended headphones off of a Tripath chip, IIRC, even with the proper loading. You can, as you know, run a balanced headphone though so long as you're giving the Tripath chip the expected load. Not sure how the loading plays with the AKGs but you can start your hunt for more...- econ

New Emotiva DAC shows great promise
To clarify: the bugs are on the USB input. So that's easy to bypass with the Toslink, and a lot of people did that with the XDA1 already given the limits on the old USB receiver chip. Still should be worked out as that chip upgrade was another big plus of the XDA2- econ

New Emotiva DAC shows great promise
The volume is analogue now. Big change and a solid response to the major shortcoming of the XDA 1, which effectively sequestered it as a traditional DAC in a signal pathway. Now it really can be a standalone unit powering active monitors or headphone. Still haven't seen many reviews though and...- econ

E-MU 0404 USB and OS X Lion
Still works post ML-upgrade without a new driver install for me. That doesn't mean it won't stop working though! Will update if ML does start to give the EMU any trouble. Glad yours is running too.- econ

List of DACs that work with iPad
Just FYI, saw this over at Computer Audiophile regarding the iPad, CCK, and the Audioquest Dragon Fly: "The headphone amplifier is 125mw unit so it's pretty hefty for such a small size. Because of the power required for the amplifier/line + analog volume control we could not keep the...- econ

E-MU 0404 USB and OS X Lion
Looks like we do get Integer Mode back in Mt. Lion 10.8. http://www.computeraudiophile.com/f11-software/audirvana-plus-direct-mode-12261/ Integer Mode and "Direct Mode" now working on Audirvana Plus in Developer Preview and, ostensibly then, in the very-soon to come release.- econ

E-MU 0404 USB and OS X Lion
Sorry to resurrect a zombie thread, but any developers using the Mountain Lion developer's preview who can comment on changes to the audio handling between Lion? With respect to the E-MU lineup, of course... I'm assuming that the upcoming upgrade won't damage the Lion drivers since the...- econ

Headphone Amp Advice
Oh, forgot to mention, Jeremy at Project Sunrise is an awesome and knowledgable guy. If you have specific questions with regard to building kits or just matching your headphones to his settings, he'll get you a solid response I'm sure. As someone who just got into a tube amp on a whim...- econ

Headphone Amp Advice
Quote: I have the Gen 1 Project Sunrise and I personally find it to be a great bang-for-the-buck addition. I get a nice warmth on my DT880 600ohms and I can definitely hear a difference on my Grado 60i though I can't quite put my finger on it. It's cleaner than running the latter...- econ

List of DACs that work with iPad
Quote: Just a sidenote on the music server, I recently got a Synology NAS and I'm using the iPad to control the iTunes server on there. To continue proving that I put my foot in my mouth asking "who uses the iPad with a powered Hub & DAC" I'm using it more and more for everything, since...- econ

Etymotic HF3 and cleaning the CustomFit inserts
No responses, but wanted to at least close this thread with a self-reponse. Got the CustomFit inserts a week ago and they are fantastic. Definitely worth the $100 entry fee and should sweeten the deal toward EtyMotics if you're on the fence for IEMs. They are comfortable in the...- econ

Etymotic HF3 and cleaning the CustomFit inserts
Hey Guys; I just upgraded my host of Meelectronics IEMs to Etymotics with CustomFits. I had a hard time always keeping my other IEMs clean though and I listen for rather long hours at a time at my long computer oriented jobs/tasks. Anyone else do long sessions and have advice on...- econ

List of DACs that work with iPad
I didn't think of using a dock and having the iPad running through a DAC via the CCK that way; that is indeed a cheaper way to do what the Wadia-type docks (inc. Cantante) do for getting the digital signal out of i-devices. That would be cool. Especially in an office setting where you can have...- econ

List of DACs that work with iPad
Ok, now that we have all of the options, might I ask a dumb question... Who actually uses their setups? And if so, what are the situations? They all seem too bulky for, say, subway commuting. Especially the setups running off a powered hub... I'm certainly not criticizing, but for...- econ

List of DACs that work with iPad
PS. It appears there's a larger Gear Head hub too. That one, however, runs off wall-wart power. Just to be clear in case someone wanted more ports but the same setup, they'd have to find another hub or check to see if the same USB-coax would substitute for the wall-wart equipped larger unit.- econ

List of DACs that work with iPad
Just tossing my 2cents and experience in. Apogee One works great with iPad 3 (new iPad, whatever). I'm using this little guy: Gear Head 4 Port USB Hub. It's powered by a second USB cable. That is, it draws power from a USB A to it's Coax pin in the Hub. It's the first time I'd ever seen a...- econ

E-MU 0404 USB and OS X Lion
Same problem here. There are 2 workarounds. The first is the optical connection already mentioned, which is what I'm currently using. Are you sure you don't have one? If your Mac can run OSX Lion, it should be new enough that the headphone jack is also an optical out. Grab a...- econ
