Bring me up to speed on IEMs! What's new school?

Just purchased a pair of DUNU DN2000J. You ruined my wallet!

Bring me up to speed on IEMs! What's new school?

Dear all,   I've been out of the IEM loop for awhile. I used to be an IEM maniac back when the SE530s used to rule. I've owned and put in serious listening time on the SE530s, SE535s, SM3s, SM64s and Westone UM3Xs. But I feel like these are kind of old school. Since then, I switched to...

    The (new) HD800 Impressions Thread

I haven't tried this yet, but everyone raves about the Vioelectric 100 with the HD800s, because that's the one the lead engineer from Sennheiser used to voice the HD800s. It's about that price.  And, you really need to try the HD800s on something else from the O2. The HD800s just don't sound...

    The (new) HD800 Impressions Thread

I've amped my HD800s with an Objective2. Thought that's all there was to sound.   Then I amped it with a vintage amp (which I still think is great), and the sound was a lot more pleasant to listen to. I listened for maybe at least 10 hours that day. But here, there was definitely detail...

    The (new) HD800 Impressions Thread

Hey guys,   I just ordered a Bryston BHA-1. So, that means I'm broke. But it also means I have a lot to be excited about!   If you've heard the setup, what do you guys think I should expect? Is there anything I should know :)?   Does this count as a fairly end-game setup?   Thanks!

    Calling All "Vintage" Integrated/Receiver Owners

Thanks for the help. I think there might be a problem with some of the electricals, then. Maybe you could tell me which ones you think?    By 12 o'clock (which is what I keep it at constantly when listening to good recordings), it is mostly loud enough for pretty decent levels of listening...

    Calling All "Vintage" Integrated/Receiver Owners

Hey, I am wondering if you guys could help me with out with a couple of short questions:   1. I've read that replacing all electrolytic capacitors is absolutely essential on any vintage amp. What are the effects of doing so to the sound? And, what are the risks of not replacing them?   2. Do...

    Calling All "Vintage" Integrated/Receiver Owners

Just a picture of my HD800s on a random JVC R-S5 stereo receiver. My HD800s came alive. (You can also see my JDS Labs Objective2 there. My source is currently a Schiit Modi... somebody suggest an inexpensive Saber 9018 DAC!) On another note, does anyone know the difference between the NAD...

    The (new) HD800 Impressions Thread

Thanks! Actually, instead of the PM, would you happen to have any recommendations as to some of these models that pair the best?   You speak highly of the NAD amp, but I don't know much about them. Is there a particular model I should be looking out for?

    The (new) HD800 Impressions Thread

This worries me a lot :(. Hopefully I will get a chance to audition the Marantz 2245 before I commit. This JVC sounds really good to my ears and all, but it does sound a little sloppy at times (whatever that means). Thanks for the heads up.   I would love to try out the HD800s with the WA2 or...

    The (new) HD800 Impressions Thread

Just got my hands on a vintage JVC RS-5 receiver, and the HD800s have suddenly come alive. I can't believe I haven't ever listened to them through something like this... I was running them out of the Objective2s before, and it was very articulate but it was very lifeless and dull.   Now the...

    Earsonics SM64: The Impressions Thread

I ordered the set of Westone tips, and here are some of my updated findings (for my ears):   Westone star tips with the blue ring are the best overall sounding of the set. I wish there was one between the green and the blue, because the green seems too short and messes with soundstaging. The...

    The (new) HD800 Impressions Thread

The HD800 sounds so, so, so, so much better with a pretty aggressive downward EQ from 6k to 10k... (by that I mean 3.5 to 5db down).   You lose the metallicy, thin, annoying sibilance and are left with a big, detailed sound with unmatched imaging.    Honestly, I can listen to these for a...

    Earsonics SM64: The Impressions Thread

I am so happy everyone else has tried the filter removal and is liking the new sound! I was worried I'd become the new SM64 pariah who told everyone to break their IEMs! Doesn't the sound just "open up"? It sounds like what the IEMs were supposed to sound like... As if with the filters in...

    Earsonics SM64: The Impressions Thread

I find they sound very full already. They aren't as thick as the SM3s, but they're still fairly thick sounding.   Play around with the different tips. Tbh, I don't think the cables will change much (and they're super expensive to boot).   If they sound less full/lively as in they kind of...

    Earsonics SM64: The Impressions Thread

If I had to guess, just from the price and construction, the Shure 846s would be better. They're also like 3x the price, but not even close to 3x the performance. I would expect the 846s to be a little more present, transparent and tighter (since I've noticed over time that the Sm64 sound is a...

    Earsonics SM64: The Impressions Thread

The SM64s surely take some juice to drive properly. The Objective2 I just got today can power them fairly well, and it sounds just astonishing with the Objective2. I can't believe that these are IEMs. When I first turned them on with the O2, I was so taken aback because of how good it sounded...

    Earsonics SM64: The Impressions Thread

Just an overall warmer sound, with better bass and lows response. Everything just has more impact and sounds wetter and more realistic (it is a very good balance between musical and analytical). The Westone Stars sound drier and brighter; it is more analytical. The Westones are still very good...

    Earsonics SM64: The Impressions Thread

The westone stars make things brighter and reduce bass quantity. The best sounding tips in my opinion are the shure yellow foams, but they degrade so quick and sound horrible once they even degrade a little bit. So I tend to just wear my Westone star full time. I'm listening to them as I type now.

What if the audio critic is completely right? What would you own?

Standard cables with that cross shielding stuff on the outside....   A DAC with a Saber chip.   Objective2 amplifier.   Some badass headphones and in-ears.

    Earsonics SM64: The Impressions Thread

If my memory serves (I literally haven't thought about headphones in a long time), the difference can be noticed by the filters inside the tips.   I think either the V1 doesn't have filters in the spouts, or if they do, they are of a different look/kind than the ones in the V2.   I know I...
