Electret Mic -> Headphones: Stages?
Hello, Working on a little "hearing aid" project. The mic will be on the same board as everything else so it's not a matter of long cable runs and picking up noise on the way etc. I have a question about how the different stages should be laid out. Currently I have been...- TheLaw

Is the Clip Zip's hardware inherently unreliable? Or is it the software?
I see tons of posts on HF with love towards the Clip Zip. It does look like a very nice value player. Really! But if I go on Amazon, nearly half of the reviews are "Died in 2 days" "Dead in the middle of a song" "Wont Turn on". This sounds very much hardware oriented, to me at...- TheLaw

Basics of headphone design- Pointers?
Hi, I'm starting a new project with microphones and some long range microphone listening devices. Yadayada... Well amidst this, I thought it would be neat to make headphones for the project...well, just because. So I'm sure there are resources around. Does anyone have any...- TheLaw

Open Source "Hearing Assistant/Aid".
Hello all, I know this looks long, but I've tried to make it easy to read and descriptive. Please give it a chance. I thought it would make a decent project for those of us with family members or friends with bad hearing...or perhaps yourself. So I'm trying to design a cheap...- TheLaw

Spell Check?
Does anyone else have a problem with Spell Check? I see mispelled a word because it has a red squiggly...but when I right click, I get a drop down menu, but no options to change it. So...maybe we should get some Spell Check happening? Running Firefox 5.0 beta...just incase that makes...- TheLaw

"Modifying" cMoy circuit for Dual/Split Supply
Hello, I'm working on a non headphone amp. A fairly enormous LM3886 x 2 + LM4780 which will make a 200W+ 2.1 setup for my computer. One of the preamplifier boards is going to use a +/- 6V transformer (effective 12V)...More on that in a second. My front panel headphone jack on my...- TheLaw

JDS Cmoy Build: Ceramic Capacitor Question!
So I decided to jump on the cMoy bandwagon. I've really been liking the idea of prefabbed PCBs for builds. You still get the enjoyment of sourcing your own parts and putting it together, but you don't have to worry about layout or crappy connections. Maybe some of you prefer to do it all on your...- TheLaw

A few problems...
Hi, On older computers, the forum seems to be painfully slow. When I scroll down the page, the hard drive goes crazy, as if it has to buffer something. There's a 1 to 2 second delay before it actually scrolls. The computer is quite fast on any other site. Maybe we could make the forums a...- TheLaw

Cheap headphone cable suggestions?
Hi, I just bought a cheap pair of Sennheiser HD201s. They sound great to my ears, (for the price). But they have a ridiculous 6 foot cable which is way too much even for most studio use. So I'd like to recable it, which actually seems to be pretty easy. Pop off the foam pads, unscrew it to...- TheLaw

MIDI to USB PCB/Schematic?
Hi, I'm in the middle of an LM3886 build, but I realized as I was on my electric drumset today that I have no way to record to my computer. The headphone out to the microphone jack on my computer makes it super distorted, so I was curious as to whether or not there was anyway to get a MIDI...- TheLaw

"Audio Grade" vs "General Purpose" Capacitors for POWER SUPPLY
Hi, I'm building an LM3886 amp and for the power supply section, I need 2 10,000uF caps @ 63V. Snap in configuration is preferred. For the main bulk capacitors on an amp's power supply, would it make any noticeable difference if I used cheaper $7 Nippon-Chemi-Con KMH capacitors vs using. $18...- TheLaw

Need Assistance with PC Speakers (Crossover Design)
Well....Maybe you saw my thread on the Logitech speakers overhaul. It seemed to work alright, but I think my luck finally ran out, and now they do not. Trust me, I've gone through every possible thing... So now I need some PC speakers. I have 2x HiVi M4N Midbass speakers already so I'll be...- TheLaw

1x 4" sub or 2x 3" sub?
Well, I stupidly ordered an 8ohm speaker for my 4ohm amp. I sent the seller and email and hopefully they'll be able to cancel the order... That aside. For loudness and quality of sound, would it be better to have 1x 4" 4Ohm subwoofer or 2x "3 8ohm subwoofers? So 1 sub that's 4 inches...- TheLaw

Panasonic FR & Audio....Good Match?
Panasonic has a new line of low impedance capacitors called FR which is supposed to have lower ESR than FM/FC. It's very new. I just ordered some to replace capacitors on a motherboard. They seem to work well. Does anyone know how they perform in audio? Like FM?- TheLaw

Modifcations for a cheap Logitech amp/sub?
So, I have a cheap piece of crap Logitech 2.1 setup for my computer. Don't hate on it please. It cost me $30 and for the most part, it does well. However, I was wondering if there are any general amp mods that I can do...? I have heard that increasing the capacitance on some of the...- TheLaw

LM1875 Amp in the works: Need help with power supply.
It's been a while since I've been on Head-Fi. I just finished my LM386 battery amp...and it's pretty cool, but I think I'm capable of much more. I'm trying to get all the parts together for an LM1875 amp. I'm hoping to couple that with a HiVi full range driver. Because of it's wide input...- TheLaw

What Op-Amp for Sound Card?
So this probably way to vague of a question. However, I am curious to hear some of your opinions. My friend is a music fanatic. I finally convinced him to improve his audio setup after 10 years of using onboard sound and $10 speakers. His new setup consists of an ASUS Xonar DS sound...- TheLaw

iPod Touch 4G + Line Out? (And iPod Touch vs Zune HD)
So you might have remembered my thread asking about good portable players. It was suggested that I get a Clip + and as much as I like the idea of a cheap high capacity player, I do appreciate the iPod Touch's UI and functionality. I have quite a few questions. If you can answer just one...- TheLaw

Looking for a good howto/schematic for an FM Radio
Well I have my collection of assorted audio goodies, but it seems I am forgetting about the good old reliable radio. FM that is. I know how to make an AM radio. I learned that in about the 3rd grade, however, I've never tried with FM. I wanted to try to make a really simple and cheap FM...- TheLaw

The Ever Popular Debate: Best Sounding (Budget) Portable Player?
HI everyone, As much as I like the simplicity of my iPod Nano, it lacks a couple of things. For one, mine has a whopping 8GB capacity /sarcasm which holds about 15% of my audio collection, which is simply depressing. However, that is not the player's fault. That is my fault for buying...- TheLaw

Capacitors in an LM386 Amp

Best Website/Store for quality OEM speakers?
Hi, I was originally set on building a headphone amp but after analyzing the situation, I determined it would not be exactly suitable as my Sennheiser CX300s have small drivers and don't need too much power. So, I've switched over to a basic LM386 amp as I just want to familiarize...- TheLaw

Cmoy: What makes Panasonic EVJ/ ALPS so appealing for audio amps ? Why can't I use a panel mount Bourns?
Hello, I am new to this forum, so hello! I am trying to put together a Cmoy. Everything seems pretty straight forward but something that is really bugging me is the potentiometer that will be controlling the volume. I've heard a lot of buzz about the Panasonic EVJ pots. However, that...- TheLaw
