How well would my HK receiver at home power some of the phones discussed here (Beyer DT880, K701)? If I can be confident that I can enjoy them at home at least if my Bithead at work is disappointing I might be willing to go for it and consider an amp upgrade later.

I had a pair of HD201s for quite a while. I noticed a MASSIVE difference when I upgraded to Denon D2000s. About 1000000x more comfortable, and so much more detailed and open.   I agree that "anything is better than HD201", especially for long listening sessions.
