Supposedly, the short bottle black base has better low-level detail, whereas the tall bottle has more slam. The short bottle is by far my favorite driver tube for HD650s in my Singlepower MPX3 Slam SE Search for adhoc's reference 6SN7 thread, there are more impressions there.

Different equipment use different types of tubes, or one amp might typically use more than one type of tube on its own. Different tubes, and different brands/construction variations/etc. of the same tube, have different sounds- people "tube-roll" (switch tubes) to find which sound they like...
