I voted HD800... but it's not that that they are the best, but good enough for me, while being significantly cheaper than the best I have used: Stax SR-009 driven KGSSHV or BHSE. I made a very un head-fi decision and sold much of my headphone gear so money could be used for other activities.

The apple remote uses IR .. most smartphones don't have IR emitters so just an app isn't enough.  If you have a universal remote (used with TV, etc) then you can likely use it with the proper setup.   --mark
