Q701 impressions thread
I wasn't trying to be offensive, just trying to help. Electricity supply is very much part of how audio equipment works, a very little bit of money (a lot less than on upgrading gear, more like beer money) and some thought and effort can go a long way. Example, I found the wall sockets...- darrenyeats

Maybe the quality of your power is fine, but I don't think UPSs generally solve mains quality problems. Even if your UPS supplies pure power, the fact you have other stuff (like wifi router and DSL modem) plugged into the same unit without quarantining filters means they could be polluting...- darrenyeats

I have updated my original link to include further explanatory links. There are several steps you can take to improve the quality of the mains supply feeding audio equipment. Some people (including me) think it has a beneficial effect on SQ. It's not so crazy as it sounds. ...- darrenyeats

Note the updated measurement (FR comparison) link in post 1 for mod/no-mod. It shows that with the mod the mid-bass is not reduced, you just get additional low bass. I wouldn't go for such a thing in a loudspeaker, I prefer a gentle roll off, because speakers have room gain which naturally...- darrenyeats

Q701 impressions thread
Many (not all) DACs lack DSP headroom so for dynamically compressed recordings a small amount of unnecessary extra distortion occurs when played without at least a little digital attenuation. It doesn't matter where, could be in the transport or a DAC digital volume control, -5db is more than...- darrenyeats

For me, Nexus 10->Q701 is bit too bright. HTC Sensation->Q701 is warmer, I like it. So even between "low end" sources, it depends I think.- darrenyeats

Very interesting. The FR measurements differ from those in post 1 of this thread - yours show no loss of upper bass/lower mid from the mod, just a boost lower down. Were these measurements repeatable? Thanks, Darren- darrenyeats

Many oversampling DACs need some digital attenuation somewhere (anywhere, in the transport or in the DAC) to render >0db inter-sample peaks correctly. 5db is more than enough for all but rare curiosity recordings. This might be a factor.- darrenyeats
