As a beginner, instead of doing a whole wire replacement buy an adapter. http://www.amazon.com/Cellet-3-5mm-Mini-Jack-Adapter-iPhone/dp/B0013RTHEO/ref=pd_cp_cps_0 plug it into you mp3 than plug you headphones into the adapter.       There are other adapters as well, read some reviews.
