Just got the 595's today, and they are much better than the Grado SR60's.  The Grados were so harsh on the high range, my ears would always cringe, but the 595's are much more forgiving.  Sounds more neutral overall.

Oh, lol no, it's a bitch to use without looking at it. Apparently though if you put it in lock mode, you can switch between songs with the volume buttons. I haven't tried it, though.

The Cowon D2+ is a fine choice. You should be able to get an 8GB for under $150 CAD And there are various other HDD-based mp3 players that have a lot more space and fully support rockbox, which can play FLAC, if you're interested in that.

No, not yet. Apparently the 6G is made of entirely different hardware, and the firmware is encrypted, so it will be a while before rockbox can be implemented fully on it.

This works for me, but there are other spikes higher in the frequency range and of course I can't get those.

I wouldn't get either for portable. I just got the SR60's and unless I use Electri-Q in Foobar, the highs are too high for my ears to bear.
