(SOLD)

I purchased this amp direct from the manufacturer in March, 2022 for $1,198 USD (list price). I burned it in for the mfr-recommended 300 hrs. I used this amp periodically in my two office systems. This THR-1 has no more than 50 total hours use beyond 300 hours' burn-in (I have multiple amps, so no one amp gets used much)

This is an extremely powerful solid state amplifier that will drive any headphone out there. It has a slightly warm, spacious, nuanced sound. It has full input/output capabilities for single-ended and balanced use. It can also be used as a system preamp. This amp runs extremely cool, surprising for such a powerful design.

Here are two detailed reviews of the THR-1:
https://soundnews.net/amplifiers/headphone-amps/kinki-studio-vision-thr-1-review-a-gentle-giant/
https://www.6moons.com/audioreviews2/kinki3/1.html

The unit is in perfect operational condition. There are a couple minor scuffs on the right side panel, as shown in 3rd picture; otherwise it is like new.

Will ship the amp in the original packing with Kinki's printed manual. Note this unit does not come with a power cord; Kinki expects the owner to supply his/her own. Thus I will not ship with a power cord unless requested.

My reduced price is $750. That includes shipping & Paypal fees in CONUS only.

Please, no trades or lowballs.

Note: I have good feedback on Head-Fi (@Pharmaboy) and on USAudioMart (LD50)

Questions:
  1. What is your DAC's voltage output?
  2. Is the DAC single-ended or balanced?
(answers will tell me everything about how you might fare with this amp...)

Unless you're one of the lucky few with a low voltage output single-ended DAC (<2 volts), the Kinki is one of those "gut-check" amps that forces you to confront gain. IMO its sound is totally worth going through some hassle for, but you do have to knock down the gain to get to the sonic goodness. There are 2 ways to do that:
  • I bought a pair of -10 dB attenuators that plug into the RCA inputs on the back of the Kinki. The the RCA interconnect from my DAC plugs into the female L & R sides of those attenuators. Voila--DAC's output is effectively somewhat lower. These things are quite transparent. I can't tell when they're in-line vs not, except that the play on the Kinki's volume pot is changed somewhat
  • Alternatively, I have a transformer-based passive volume controller that I can put in line between the DAC and the Kinki. It also is very transparent, but when you wire in a passive box and a 2nd set of interconnects, you are changing the signal, however slightly.
The -10 dB attenuators work exactly as intended, but their effect is more pronounced if your DAC already has reasonable volume (ie, between 2.0 volts and 2.5 volts). Much higher than that and the attenuators' effect is lessened.

i have a Bifrost 2 on the way, so 4v balanced and 2v SE. have a modius currently which i believe has the same specs. I've heard adding a tube preamp is great for the Kinki

2v is perfect. You can also control gain thru a preamp.

Even 4vrms will work with the Kinki. It is just a really good amp all the way around. It is so powerful. I think the Bifrost would be a great pairing with the Kinki.

The 2V should be fine.

I hear that's a good DAC. Just heard my friends gen1 multibit yesterday.
