I started with headphone hi-fi back in the early '90s when my father got sick of hearing the modern pop music I liked through my hi-fi system. In 2007, when the earpads on my headphones became too flat, I joined Head-Fi where I began the search for a good pair of headphones, then a good system to enjoy music with.

Nice! That is very helpful. Also, I will add NIN.com for those who like Nine Inch Nails. The latest album, The Slip, is available in 24/96 FLAC completely free. It is mastered very well, too.

A very helpful resource. Two more sites I use:
eClassical.com -- based in Sweden, has a good selection of high-rez recordings from BIS and other labels.
qobuz.com -- based in France, sells "Studio Masters" in 24/44.1 and 24/96 formats. A good alternative for classical and jazz (especially ECM and similar releases).

The Slip is NOT well mastered. It is compressed to unacceptable levels.

True. The compression is not horrible on the simple bits, but does get a bit overwhelming on the loud parts. I should have said the album is well recorded. Everything sound realistic and there is "wet" studio sounds in there. Anyhow, it sounds better than almost any pop I have ever heard. While not quite audiophile, it is almost there and can really shine on a good system.

i don't think i am ruining the industry by asking for some free HQ music download sites am i? because I download a lot of music and i can't be assed to pay money for the music.

bandcamp.com has options to download in most any format, and you can find many albums that are free or pay-what-you-can. Many genres, too.

Boomkat should be on here. Most of their music is 16/44, though they do, I've heard, sometimes have higher res music.

I get some 24/44.1 from bleep.com. Not really high res tho.
