ZMF Aegis Official Thread

I had a couple of black plate Tungsol 6550s on loan for a while and thought they were great, one of my favorites.

Yeah, the black plates are cool. All of the vintage Tung-Sol 6550s are good, but the black plates are getting hard to find/pricey. My second gen black plates with side D getters are one of the few tubes I'll probably never find a backup for. I tend to use my 3-hole 6550s and save these, which is sort of silly.

Cool!

I also have some GEC VT60 (807) on the way and have some custom made adapters from @Deyan already made and being shipped out on Monday.

We are a terrible influence on each other, and I love it! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:
I saved a pair of those in ebay not knowing whether they’d work in the Aegis or not. Liked the look of them 😂 I guess I’ve just been enabled to pick up a pair at some point

They have been getting talked up quite a bit lately in another thread, and as I am a fan of the early GEC house sound, I just had to find out what all the fuss is about. Several, are preferring the VT60 over the KT66, KT88, 6550. . .

More to come.

I'm keeping an eye out for a NOS pair of EI KT90. Pretty rare tubes, but I am fascinated by them for some reason. Some nice pairs from Italy, but they come with the 500% Italian tube seller tax, so not going to work.

Nice looking tubes, with solid welded plates and d-getters, of which are two distinguishing traits of an earlier version. You know what we tube heads always say, the earlier the better.

Anyone know how the GEC VT60 compare to the Mullard EL37, 38 or the EL39?

From that same Indian seller I'd guess .

That said, I'm also curious about the vt-60, and all the other 807 equivalent type tube - each commands vastly different prices. Seems like everyone used to makes these for a while - the basic construction are very similar. At one point I even saw valvo branded 807 like these. I wonder if there are much different between the "el cheapo" RCA 807 (the original) and its more expensive European brother.

I'm gonna defer to @zach915m on that one.
There's 22 120v units left and 20 230v units left at the release price.

So 28 sold in 120v and 5 sold in 230v!

Of note we have 1 x Kt8c driver tube sets left.

Excited for all the new Aegis owners!

I was so torn on those kt8c tubes, now I’m kinda kicking myself for not adding them.

Honestly I’m surprised the 120v didn’t sell out day one. There’s been so much buzz about it I thought it was going to be sold out in minutes. I was online and ready to order exactly at 630 pst in fear I’d miss out.

For a $3500 ultra niche product with an aesthetic that’s against the grain (😜) for most hifi products, almost 30 units sold in 48hrs is pretty wild tbh.

Any chance you guys might make a matching cage available?

Edit: anyone have experience with Sophia tubes? They have 274b, kt88, and 6sl7 variants in Aqua Blue. . . Mighty tempted to fill up my Aegis and OTL with matched tubes.
