If you haven't heard it yet, you'll be very impressed with the SHA-1 I sent to Mercuttio. Unlike my Gold it goes to dead silent. The volume pot is as well.

based on the test i did yesterday with my stepper, i am quite convinced that the majority of the noise on my amp is from the photentiometer.

an alps blue would likely yeild a substantial improvement to me. i am holding off on the stepper because its huge, and to install it i would have to uninstall the WHOLE photentiometer.

I'm pretty sure the DACT Stepped attenuator install corrected that problem on yours, J.

Not completely sure though, as it was some time ago.

I would likely agree with this as the amp I have, Grinch's and carlo's all enjoyed the lower noise of the DACT over the potentiometer so I would wager it is the culprit.

!

argh yer killin' me! silly British post! what are they doing, sailing it over here on the QE2?

Edit - btw, this is all a stab at the UK Post's expense and no reflection on the seller at all - he's a standup guy and I have no reason to put anything else but that once the Melos arrives in his feedback thread!

holey schamoley. nikon, you are a god. i have a feeling you and compro3 are going to get plenty of biz if you offer your services to the public!

speaking of which, Bozebuttons sent me a pic of the insides of his Maestrobator. I dunno what I'm looking at - maybe you do!

I do know that's Caro's signature next to the Big Black Solen Cap tho!

You know I just noticed that Nikongod's Melos and Boze's Melos have that gigantic Solen cap, but mine didn't and the one coming to me doesn't - what does that mean?

Here's a pic of the incoming one, internals -

it means you will have to let me bring your amp home from the nyc meet to put the cap in.

in my amp, when i got it the solen was wired up to the output of the high voiltage recifyer. i removed it from there. i also removed the big HV cap (right near the m in melos in that photo) and replaced it with the solen.
