The K701s are here ;)

Since I got my ALO re-cabled 701's I've felt that "s" sounds and cymbals are uncomfortable, however, that seems to be going away slowly. Just for fun, I took my portable set-up to the local electronics mega-store and tried out some similarly priced Denon W5000's and ATH W1000's (might have got the model names wrong there). They both sounded rather bright to me in the upper ranges too, so I guess it's just me. However, the Denons seemed to deliberately have a lot more base.

I reckon though that a good set-up will get you enthusiastic about music you'd not normally listen to.

Some said they need more like 1200 hrs for it to be fully burned in - I can see why, it just keeps improving and improving. I just need to improve my source from iAudio X5L 30G FLAC (shudder)

700-1200 hours?

That's one of the dumbest things I've ever heard.

Even my oldest headphone hasn't changed that much.

Normally I would agree with you, but my own pair of K701's did not even start to break in until the 100 hour mark. Now past 200 hours they are still changing and show no signs of settling in yet.

I normally associate break in with the first 50 hours of operation, but the K701 is clearly an odd duck in this regard. I know there is lots of science that contradicts it, but you can't argue with what hundreds of people hear and experience.

Stick around these threads and you'll hear even "dumber" things. : ) My K701 didn't start coming into their own until 300+ hours. I'd say, too, that at about 800-1000, they sound more evenly textured and harmonic than ever. : )

haha, I hear the burn-in half-life of the K701 is right around that of uranium.

The half lives of the U-235 and U-236 isotopes are both over a million years (more than a 100x greater than 10,000 years). We will all have met our Maker by then.

760 million years to be exact... right around the sweet spot for burn in time

I've been trying to find a pair with a build date around 760M B.C. that have been run 24/7, but they're pretty hard to find

Yes. They're the ones with the granite ear cups and fossilized Varimotion diaphragms. : )

I wonder how it'll be before we see someone selling us on the benefits of granite cup and fossilized diaphragm mods for K701s.
