Sorry but when someone start comparing his headphone to headphones he'd never heard before his opinions becomes invalid, and impressions from noobs are not the most accurate. I'm not saying I dismiss these impressions/reviews, but I don't take them seriously either. But to be honest I don't take any review seriously, everyone has their own perception of sound. I use "credible" reviews to get a basic idea of what a headphone might sound like.
There's a difference between an objective review and a review filled with misinformed and exaggerated informations and facts.

If I want an improvement over the S500's then I'd put on my 'Sones, SOMiC's, German Maestro's or in all reality even the Monoprice 8323's sound better. BUT considering the price of these for a nice portable headphone, the S500's share equal time with the PortaPro's in my daily carry and they fit that job to a tee!
 
I don't know about everyone else, but since this is an Appreciation Thread for the S500's I am starting to get real tired of all the S680 hype and foolishness. If you don't think the S500's are a good headphone anymore then please sell your pair and move along to your OWN thread where life is so much better...

I have 8323 and S500.  S500 is in a different league than 8323.  I'd sell 8323 but they aren't worth enough.

I have just listened to S500 from Creative soundblaster card, which I usually use for Sennheiser HD 449, and S500 sounds incredible, in particlular bassy songs are great and I think, better than HD 449. Granted HD 449 is not high end, but cost twice-three times of S500 and yet S500 seem so good.

I had previously been posting in the s400 thread as i own those but long story short giving my gf my white 400's so thinking of getting the 500's for myself instead of another pair of 400's.
 
I mainly listen to trance, hip hop, rock, metal. I recently got some monster dna's are really like the sound(just using them as a guideline). The 400's are good but the bass is bit soft, not as pronounced, vocals a touch dark I find. I still think the 400's are great but wondering if the 500's would be better suited for myself. I listen to my music quite loud and I read somewhere that the 500 highs get harsh at high volumes, is this true?
 
The 500's also have a "V" shaped sound apparently. Would the 500's sound similar to the monster dna's or v-moda m80's for example?
 
Lastly does the gunmetal finish chip over time like the black?
 
I found the s500 for about $42.xx shipped which is only about $14 more than the s400's. Seems like the 500's dropped a little since I got my 400s awhile back.

Hi everyone, I'm new here but I have a question. I just got my HA-S500 today and I am really enjoying them, but the ear pads are too small for me and don't fit around my ear and cover it like my old headphones. I was reading this thread and read here that ATH leathers are one of the best pads to replace them with, but when I search that on google, a lot of different models show up, so I am kind of stuck. Can anyone help me? I'm almost completely new to all of this, such as not knowing how to replace the pads on the S500, so I would really appreciate the help anyone can give me, thank you.
 
Edit: On second thought, would I be able to replace the ear pads with my old headphones? My old pair is a JVC HA-RX300, so I don't know if that'll actually work out.

You need the WS55 pads.

However, if you think they will fit around your ears you're barking up the wrong tree mate. The S500 is an on-ear supra-aural headphone, so it isn't going to go over anyone's ears it's going to sit on them. Even the new successor, the S680 has bigger caps!

Oh, I thought I saw a mod on here that allowed that lol. Thanks for the recommendation. I've gotten use to the on-ear feel and it is a lot more comfortable than I expected it to be over long usage, I'll probably switch out the pads though in near future to try out new things with it. Thanks again.

There are some quite a ways back in the thread who have put HM5 pads on the S500 for over ear use. You probably wouldn't want to wear them outside with this mod but for home use it would be just the ticket. I don't have a link to the post on the mobile here but someone could post it for you. Or just search HM5 S500...

Thanks for the info. I've been switching back and forth between my new and old headphones just to see how much better the S500's are lol, but I actually think I like on-ear better. Although I've only had a few experiences with on-ear and over-ear, I feel that on-ear fits a lot more snug and comfortable than my old over-ear headphones. I'm going to look up the differences (besides the obvious size of the pad) so I can learn more about it. Thanks.

You havent got the best pad of them all, which is the WS55 pad. You can get them straight from AT service.
