Subtonic STORM: Impressions and Discussion

I thought about running them as a combo before but never side by side. Mass-Kobo is an amp though so you still need a DAC to feed it. I have heard a lot of good things about Mass-Kobo and the 465 in particular, but I haven't heard them yet. I was hoping to hear them at CanJam but I heard that Masuda-san will not be going.
I've tried the MASS-Kobo 475 (portable), 433, 394II and 465 with Storm. All are fantastic and just get better as you go up the range. The 465 is out of most budgets and Masuda-san only makes a handful a year. The 394 II is my next move in headphone amplifiers and, as far as I'm concerned, is as endgame as I'll ever go. Both 433 and 394 II are brilliant and should not be overlooked due to the 465 "halo" model.

what kind of cable did you use with 433, 394 and 465? i couldn’t locate 4.4 balanced input. perhaps adapters ?
The desktop amps only have balanced XLR and single-ended RCA inputs. I'd typically use the XLR output from a desktop DAC, or you could use a 4.4mm to dual XLR cable, if you're using a portable source. Dual RCA or 3.5mm to RCA also works fine, depending on your source.

Someone sell him a Storm so he does a video about its bass in comparison to the Trifecta (and Z1R) and what the main strong / weak points are.

Have you (or anyone else) ever done a side by side with the Storm running through a DX320 MAX TI vs. the MASS-Kobo?

If so, what were your thoughts?
I have both. I briefly tested it before sending out STORM to Subtonic for a cosmetic upgraded. From memory it scales even more with the 475. More note weight and body. You probably don't need because MAX already have tons of power but I have to say it is a dynamics feast. MAX is very resolving, a details monster and a fantastic pairing with STORM. The 475 just magnifies it to greatness.

Thanks for the input. Out of curiosity, what is this cosmetic upgrade? 🤔

Nothing substantial. Subtonic decided to make a cosmetic change to the faceplates of the Launch Edition STORM. The new faceplates feature a deeper groove, which allows for more even expansion and contraction of the enamel when heated in the oven.

Apparently Masuda-san will actually be at CanJam SoCal, so I'm excited to hear what he has on offer. I've got my DAP and all the cables I need to try these four.

Excellent news. Any of the MK amps make Storm sing, imho. Hope you have a great time.

Left is the updated faceplate! We widened the widths of the yellows and created deeper grooves in the black. The enamel now catches more light so it looks more multi-dimensional. This faceplate update is free for any STORM owner - they've all been offered the complementary upgrade.

Side note - we will be displaying at CanJam SoCal this weekend; hit us up at booth F13. We'll see you there!
