As imo K271S rules over D2000, PL750, MS2i (I got rid of all of these and still keep 271S). Sounds like we just value different qualities in what we are hearing.

Yes sir

I now have the perfect combination for rock music with the ALO-780s and the Grado RS-1

If I had knew that they were going to be that good for prog-rock, I would have purchased them with the 18G cryo wire (JenaLabs) instead of the 20AWG vampire wire

As it relates to the D5000, at least from a MEASUREMENT perspective, this isn't actually the case. The D5000's have more bottom octave energy than the HFI-780's do. I measured them myself. The 780's have more APPARENT overall bass energy, because the bass is less even, and has some peaks which make the bass seem "punchier".

I no longer have D2000's so I cannot make the same measurements.

Point well taken. I don't know how the D2000s would stack up relative to the 5000s with the same measurement. My opinion on the D2000 were obviously not based on any scientific measurements at all. Just pure listening. Also I had them months ago so was talking from whatever memory I have left of them. Sonic memory has a short lifespan. To ME, the 780's bass is much more enjoyable than the D2000s. I really wish I had the D2000s now so I can A-B them. Ah well.

If you're in CA, I would think that a store with Denon's would be close to you.... but perhaps I am wrong in this aspect.

How much better are the D5000s than the 2000s, subjectively (note, not objectively from a frequency or performance perspective, I just want to know the differences in the SQ of the two to a human ear)?

Well, I kept my D2000s, as well as the D5000s, and with my Proline 550s, HFI-780s, and my ATH-W1000s, make up my little headphone family. The D2000s, imo, are a much smoother headphone that the 780s, but I suppose not as forward and fun. I'd lean toward the D2000s without hesistation, but the portability of the HFIs (and how they fit) and the fact that I really like my 550s, made buying these easy, and they are the phones I travel with.

That sounds pretty accurate to me, Peteham, well said. I don't think of "forward" as "fun" necessarily, but I understand your point, and I know some people WOULD feel this way.

The 780's are excellent cans, but the Denons are better in terms of JUST sound quality IMO, and certainly they are more linear, and more comfortable. They also definitely isolate very poorly for closed cans, whereas the 780's isolate well, and are nicely portable since they fold.

I couldn't not agree more. I don't need sound rocketed into my head to enjoy it.

There just seems to be a gap in the transition from the mids to the mountainess highs. I prefer smoothness.

So far I find the Proline 750's as more balanced and open. I am using a tube amp right now and the 780's still have that peaky high or slightly metallic. Time, or maybe some absorbing material inside of the housing of the drivers.

I also prefer smoothness, so I'm not sure what you're disagreeing with. I said I DON'T equate "Forwardness" to "Fun". There are lots of folks that do, however, and that's cool.

Those double negatives can make you think twice. But then again I may not, not agree all the time with what I just said not always understanding what I am not saying.

The mids of the K271s are perhaps slightly better than the mids of the 780s but for the rest, the 780s are overall better than the K271s. With the time, the mids of my 780s are slowly becoming as good as the mids of my K271s

Be mindful that I have the ALO-780s...

Comparing to D2000, which I liked a lot btw:
Better details, more emphasized mids (shweet ones
biggrin.gif
), treble is less aggressive, bass is tighter but of a lesser quantity (may be 5-10% less then ATH-AD2000), top notch isolation, smaller soundstage. Both are smooth and pretty well rounded. D2000 needs some headband stretching to tame the bass and bring details out. I am not a bass person thus preferred K271S by a small major sonically and because of the isolation.
I used to own Ultrasone HFI-650 Trackmaster and Proline-750 in the past, to my taste both were a big disappointment, although I must admit that I enjoyed HFI-650 for quite a while until I heard better phones, that was way back at the beginning of my headphones journey.

Silverrain, are your 780 standard? IMO it is not fair to compare the 780 from ALO to the D2000 since they are twice the cost as Pfillion did.

STOCK -- BOTH STOCK
