I regret to say this but IMO the Denon D2000s, the Grado 325i and the AKG K271s (with the headphile cable.) are far behind the ALO-780s for Prog-Metal music.

It's sad but I'll have to get rid of my K271s because I don't think that I'll use them anymore in the future..

Isolation is also better on the 780s than the K271s.

Cheers

And now this morning, I like them. Listening to Current 93 and Gnidrolog I'm almost enjoying them. Many factors seem to go into attaining joy from these headphones.

The isolation is what keeps bringing me back to these.

The game continues....

These do isolate the best of anything I have. I can play music loud and my partner 4 feet from me can't hear anything, and well, I can't hear her, which annoys the hell out of her and in a way I can understand that but "honey, you said you didn't want to hear the tinkle of music playing!"

This morning after a hard night of loud pink noise, these things suck. They sound really good and are throwing a deep and fairly wide stage and the sound is smooth. Up down, Up, down, Hey its all fun, right? I can see where recable would also be a good thing, from experience. Just for fun I have two sets of new HD650 cable and it might be interesting.

I just slipped on the 750's, which I have on a splitter and yes, the 750's are different. More neutral, throwing a larger stage and more speaker like. I don't have a face right next to mine but a more natural presentation. I really like the 750's. I wonder how they would be recabled? I can see where I would like the 9's. More time needed for burnin on the 780's. Open up baby, open up. Give it time Johnny or was that Jam? identity crisis.

That means that 780 really rubbed you in the right way.

As imo K271S rules over D2000, PL750, MS2i (I got rid of all of these and still keep 271S). Sounds like we just value different qualities in what we are hearing.

Well, interestingly enough, since these cans are so geared for progressive rock, what is my favorite thing to listen to with them?

Why, acoustical, of course!

Bizarre, I know. But it makes sense in a strange sort of way. The vocals are very clear and distinct, and everything feels very relaxed and open with the 780s when listening to the softer side of music.

so that manufacturers would offer headphones with different sound signature, in the end, we have more to choose from. It's a great thing, isn't it?

I owned the D2000 (stock) at one point so am speaking from memory. IMO the 780s outperform the stock D2000s sonically. Comfort is much better on the D2000 but they don't isolate.

If isolation isn't a question, would the 780s still be superior in your opinion?

Mine have shown better highs, and deeper lows, than my already-excellent D2000.
I did A/B comparo, on a very good (for testing all my cans) CD that has on it the highest-highs, to the lowest-lows (pretty much), and the 780 let me hear things that simply were not on my D2000, which have many hours of use on them since burn-in, and sound great themselves.
A combo of RS-1 highs and (almost -- VERY close) Darth Beyer bass.
In one can.

Unless you happen to pick them up at a bad moment during burn-in!

EDIT: Mine are still STOCK.

Silverrain, are your 780 standard? IMO it is not fair to compare the 780 from ALO to the D2000 since they are twice the cost as Pfillion did.

Yeah. My 780s are sitting at home and burning in on an endless song loop as we speak. Hopefully I can get them up to 100 hours of burn in by the end of the day tomorrow.

From memory, The D2000s had a smoother treble. Some people may prefer its softer treble to the 780s. I'm happy with the 780s treble.

Bass is no contest. The 780s eat the D2000s for lunch. The 780 hits lower while still keeping it tight.

Mids - the 780s have a more forward and very clean midrange that I enjoy. I don't really recall the D2000s midrange. If it was special, chances are I would remember.

Also I dont know if this is because of the S-logic thing but the 780 sounds open and airy to me. Whereas, the D2000s sounded closed to me.

Overall I found the D2000 too mellow for my taste which is why I sold it. The 780 have the detailed and more upfront sound that I enjoy more.

Hope this helps. And yes, my 780s are stock with about 270 hours or so on them.

Hmmm. I do agree about everything except that the 780's don't hit lower than the D2000's. Much more impact on the 780's but not lower in my opinion. D2000 = definitely too mellow and closed. I basically have the very same thoughts as musicmaker.

As it relates to the D5000, at least from a MEASUREMENT perspective, this isn't actually the case. The D5000's have more bottom octave energy than the HFI-780's do. I measured them myself. The 780's have more APPARENT overall bass energy, because the bass is less even, and has some peaks which make the bass seem "punchier".

I no longer have D2000's so I cannot make the same measurements.
