Sony XB500... recable them with Cryo cable if it makes you more comfortable thinking how much you've invested into your headphones. All the 'higher level' headphones like the Sony SA5000, Qualia 010 and HD800 are all catered to producing a more natural sound. The reason so many people prefer different headphones is because we all prefer different music and presentations, what works well for one genre won't work particularly well for another.

Yeah for bassy music there the best I've heard... not great all-rounders, vocals are set back somewhat, warm sound signature but very very deep. And price is just wool over your eyes, if Sony sold it in a nicer box with a velvet cushion and replaced Extra Bass with Audiophile they could of targeted a different market with $300 headphones. I've said over and over again how the JVC RX700 sound better than stock Denon D2000s and they cost me $33...

yeah , im listen bassy music : YouTube - Mr. Sam ft. Claud9 - Cygnes[HD] ("real bass" in 58 sec.) , YouTube - Deadmau5 - Ghosts 'N' Stuff (Featuring Rob Swire from Pendulum) [HQ] , YouTube - Markus Schulz - Let It Go (Monogato remix) , YouTube - Gareth Emery - Metropolis (Original Mix) |HD| , YouTube - Aladiah vs Signs - Crystal Alchemy

I haven't had as much time as I wanted to listen to these cans, as I probably only have < 50 hours of total usage on them. But I have noticed that some of the initial treble harshness is going away.

That was the same behaviour that had mine, before of that the drivers in them (bad resistance to input power), stop working (40 hours +/-)....
Now, with my recabled and new transplanted drivers. They sound as they should sound: With a Very punchy/slaming bass and a very deep bass {stronger in 16 hz [distort a little with my amp in the headphile cd test (mp3 files)]}, Forward mids but enjoyable; tonality, excellent separation and image, details, clarity, speed (almost same as my SA5000 drivers), resolution, and a smoother treble. all with an very open and big soundstage.

I don't own the 780's yet. It's my goal for 2010. Who would you guys recommend to recable them? Not just looking for an upgraded cable, but a shorter one. I prefer headphones with 4 foot cables, not 10 or 12. I have extension cables if I need it to be that long.

I don't own them but from reading this entire thread, I'd say yes, do recable!

I know I will

An amp which pairs really well with the HFI-780 is the Amphora, built by RSA and ALO and sold by ALO at about 1000 US dollars.

LOL, $1000 amp for this $200 pair of phones... especially since bassfreak1993 asked about a ~$170 amp.

Bassfreak, the HFI are extremely easy to drive, you really don't need an amp as long as you have a halfway decent source. The bass should get punchy over time via mystical burn-in (or, you get used to it), and an amp won't fix that anyways.

FWIW, it doesn't matter if I plug the HFI into my Woo6, Headsix (almost in your price range), or Cowon S9 - to my ears they basically don't change their sound.

Sorry about that. The conversion factor given, (3 $US / PLN), and a 500 PLN budget led me to believe that an amp in the $1500 US price range was being asked about. If the conversion factor is ( 3 PLN / $US), then an Amphora is WAY over the intended budget of more like $170 US. XE just gave me a conversion of about $177 US for 500 PLN.

At about $160 US ($159 + shipping at Whiplash Audio) I use my AMP3, a DAP with a built-in Class A amplifier, with my 780's. The 780's sound really great straight out of the AMP3 - very nearly as good as my favorite rig with the 780's: the AMP3 as the source, amped by the Amphora. The AMP3, all by itself, brings out of the 780's all of the sonic qualities that I bought and love them for. The AMP3 can also be used with another source as just an amp. I do not use the AMP3 in that way, so I cannot say from experience how that will sound with the 780's.
