Shanling M9 Plus - Flagship Android player
Jul 14, 2023 at 12:44 AM Post #226 of 430
@Shanling has confirmed that the players with 665 chipset has serious wifi issues and they don't have any timeline to fix it.
All the players with 665 processor is struggling with this issue.
So folks take decision accordingly.
2000$+ dap not crafted well in software section.
M7 was launched last year and till now this issue is not resolved by the team.
Don't fall on false promises of firmware update.
This is a pretty serious thing for me personally and it reminds me why I avoid companies like this when I want to buy something this expensive. In fact, I also consider service for potential problems when making a purchase.

@Shanling it should not work this way.

This issue is truly unfortunate and we hope our software team can bring a fix for it.

At this time, we can recommend purchasing our players from official sellers, test with your network and in vast majority of cases it will work just fine. And if not, you can return the player to the seller for refund.

This is a very weird situation, as you received your SDK including the Linux kernel from Qualcomm (directly or indirectly), and I presume you have not modified anything to do with the network stack there. If that is the case, this is either an issue with the received SDK (Linux kernel) or the firmware of the wireless module of the SoC. That would mean, I would expect it to affect all 665 based DAPs in the market, not just yours.

A Google search reveals other users on the internet complain about having such issues even on desktop Linux system, even on newer kernels. I use Linux based OS 95% of the time for work and personally, at least I don't remember seeing the issue.

So, I compared it to SP3000 and M9+ was slower than SP3000 while importing from Qobuz, though it was not so slow that it would affect streaming even 192 kHz music. Then I did another import and this time it was faster than before. Internet spped test shows 130 Mbit/s (~20 MBytes/s) which is I think about the same speed as SP3000.

I will suggest to refrain on buying something which has future update fix.
Because it never happens.
@Shanling is totally crap in customer service.
I can show you multiple screenshots of their customer service.

Most of the routers have this issue, infact there testing device is struggling to give better speeds.
Look the attached files.

So I have been spending more and more time with M9 Plus. I am quite annoyed at the M9 Plus boot time and lack of android 12 but hey, you can't be perfect... My initial impressions stand, and then some. Maybe it's burn in or brain burn in or both.... I must be around 200 hours now.

M9 Plus strikes a balance of qualities that is quite a mix :
  • vibrant with the right energy everywhere,
  • organic and full bodied yet with stunning separation and detail,
  • powerful and able to drive headphones but no distorsion whatsoever and a black background with zero hiss.
This one will make it hard for Shanling to top himself, as I said before, this could (should?) have been M10 as it's no incremental iteration to M9. Just wow, pure enjoyment!

I am not keeping M17 since M9 Plus has enough power for DCA Stealth on the go.
After much A/B to my surprise I am letting go of RS8 R2R goodness and I don't think I can justify keeping N7 as well for all its 1bit DAC glory... this one I am still on the fence about, will probably depend how WM1ZM2 turns out to be...
Hello, have you tried the M9, RS8 and N7 with line out to an external amp? I would be curious to read your feedback on such a comparison. You seem surprised and it could be the Shanling amp sound that is exceptionnal but the RS8 and N7 DAC when feeding a different amp flavour would also surprise you favorably! haha

Firmware Update Released

Go to the website for full notes and download link:

https://en.shanling.com/article-FirmUpdateJuly23.html

Note: We recommend downloading the file and proceeding with a Manual update, as OTA update might be too slow.
There's something with the Qobuz application. Although it is 44.1 kHz file, the displayed sample rate is 705.6 kHz, as if some sample rate conversion is applied. Is it only a display issue? If not and a SRC is applied, is it possible to disable it? Thank you.

Another 44.1 kHz album again from Qobuz and I see no SRC. Maybe a Qobuz application issue?

It seems first one is 24 bits hires flac while the second one is CD quality with 16 bits.. strange the first 24 bits file seems to be so much oversampled..

Updated my firmware to 1.09 this morning OTA. Total download and install time was about 70-75 minutes. Didn't get a chance to listen much before heading off for work, but I noticed that when streaming from Roon (lossy internet radio station) Roon no longer upsampled 44.1 to 48 as it did in the past. Will have to check this out more later, but I was happy to see this change.
